Cancer Prevention Advocate Dr. Margaret Cuomo

This article about Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo is being posted because it is a good summary of her book on cancer in the United States and the need to change its “cancer culture” which currently focuses on early screening and treatment. We must move towards primary prevention, which includes identifying and limiting environmental risk factors. The article fails to mention that Dr. Cuomo includes reduction of cell phone use along with avoidance of BPA and other substances in her list of ways to protect against cancer.

My Lunch with Cancer Prevention Advocate Dr. Margaret Cuomo
by Gabe Canales, Blue Cross Foundation, Chron, 16 January 2013

In New York City this week I had more than lunch. I had food for thought from cancer-prevention advocate Dr. Margaret Cuomo, author of the provocative must-read A World Without Cancer. At the suggestion of Dr. Cuomo, we met at the acclaimed Michelin-starred Rouge Tomate, which serves delicious farm-to-table organic cuisine developed in consultation with an on-staff nutritionist.

For months I’d been looking forward to meeting Dr. Cuomo and exploring ways for my Blue Cure Foundation to support her, and for me to collaborate with her. I believe it’s imperative to share her incredibly valuable message that our government, medical community, patient advocates and other non profits must heed: that we must focus on preventing cancer before it even starts.

The daughter of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and sister to current Governor Andrew Cuomo, Dr. Cuomo has a deeply instilled commitment and service to others, which was immediately evident during our lunch. She repeatedly expressed a need to change the status quo so we can prevent cancer and save lives. After more than 40 years and $90 billion-plus dollars spent on the “War on Cancer,” cancer still kills over 1,500 Americans daily and there’s still no cure. This deeply troubles Dr. Cuomo, who says we cannot accept this as our new normal.

Over the next few hours we discussed some of the startling facts in A World Without Cancer, such as:

· Cancer is responsible for one in four deaths in America.

· Research shows that we can prevent half of all cancer with what we know now.

· The National Cancer Institute spends $3.3 billion on research for cancer treatment vs. only $232 million for prevention.

· Tobacco companies spend $10 billion a year to market cancer-causing cigarettes in the U.S.

· Obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise account for 30 percent of all cancers.

· Many simple steps, such as eating cooked red tomatoes and adding the spice tumeric to food, can cut the risk of cancer.

· Despite the fact that heavy people are more than 50 percent more likely to die from cancer than normal-weight people, the government still grants more federal subsidies for corn-based additives such as high fructose corn syrup and cornstarch than it does for healthier fruits and green vegetables.

· The proper amount of Vitamin D can reduce the risk of many cancers, including colon, breast, ovarian and prostate cancers, but the federal government and public health officials are not doing enough to promote its benefits.

· More than 400 chemicals that are suspected or proven carcinogens (any substance causing cancer) are commonly found in our food, water and air.

· Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical commonly found in many plastics, canned food and other items, has been linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and hyperactivity and aggression in children. Studies show that parabens may stimulate the growth of hormone related cancers, and traces of the preservative have been found in breast tumors. Yet parabens are widely found in popular cosmetics, moisturizers and hair products. The FDA should ban the use of these harmful chemicals in consumer products.

I encourage others to read Dr. Cuomo’s A World Without Cancer to gain more knowledge, to become empowered and to make a difference by helping to change the cancer culture of America.
