Electrosensitivity: Is Technology Killing Us?

Tim Hallam, 36, sleeps in a custom-made silver-coated
sleeping bag that helps block out electromagnetic fields.
by Nicholas Blincoe, The Guardian, 29 March 2013

Is modern life making us ill? Yes, say those who suffer from electrosensitivity. Are they cranks, or should we all be throwing away our mobile phones?
Tim Hallam is just tall enough to seem gangly. His height makes the bedroom feel even smaller than it is. Muddy sunlight filters through the grey gauze hung over his window. His narrow bed appears to be covered with a glistening silver mosquito net. The door and the ceiling are lined with tinfoil. Tim tells me there is also a layer of foil beneath the wallpaper and under the wood-effect flooring. He says, "The room is completely insulated; the edges are sealed with aluminium tape and connected with conducting tape so I could ground the whole room. It's a Faraday cage, effectively. Grounding helps with the low frequencies radiation, apparently. The high frequencies just bounce off the outside."

Study: Nuclear Plant Shutdown Results in 4,319 Fewer Cancer Cases

by Brian Krans, Nuclear News, 28 March 2013

“….Previous studies on the rates of cancer near eight closed nuclear reactors showed a 25 percent decrease in childhood cancers, while the national rate rose 0.5 percent 10 years after the plants closed. …….”

Closing a nuclear reactor in California has prevented an estimated 4,319 cases of cancer in the past 20 years, according to a new study released Thursday. Researchers studied the population of the state capitol of Sacramento, an area with more than 1.4 million people living within 25 miles of the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant.

Using 20 years worth of data, researchers found an overall drop in the incidence of all cancers, including six of the 16 most common types. The sharpest drop came within a decade of the plant’s closing in 1989.

Switzerland: Victims of Asbestos Speak Out - Part 2

My companion, who died from mesothelioma at age 69,
believed he had been exposed to asbestos while
working on railroad engines in Belgium at age 19.
The daughter of a victim of asbestos who died of mesothelioma, questions the responsibility of Eternit, the asbestos factory where her father worked during three summers as a student. “In Switzerland, the statute of limitations is ten years. The law must change. Here the industrial lobby is so powerful that my hopes rest more on the creation of an international tribunal.” The industrial lobby is indeed very powerful in Switzerland: asbestos, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications. The emerging public health issue of serious illnesses related to the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted by wireless technology has been compared to the growing catastrophe of asbestos-related diseases. Let the example of asbestos be a lesson to all of us. The 10-year statute of limitations must be changed in Switzerland because it will make it impossible to legally recognize a cause-effect relationship between EMR-related illnesses and wireless technologies, given that the potential serious illnesses which may result, such as brain cancer, usually declare themselves only after 10 years’ exposure.

Switzerland, headquarters of Eternit, and the home country from which the tentacles of the asbestos-cement industry spread, does not recognize, or only with great difficulty, its victims. The country has invoked a statute of limitations of 10 years in labor law. In Switzerland, the victims of asbestos are living an ordeal of resentment, suffering and painful memories. Sometimes in total indifference. Here are their testimonies (in two separate posts). The Radio-TV Suisse Romande will be devoting a series of radio programs about the victims of asbestos ("Vacarme": 8-12 April 2013). GMOs: Stop the "Monsanto Protection Act" Now!

UPDATE (27 March): Late last night, President Obama signed H.R. 993, which contained the Monsanto Protection Act, into law, despite the insistence of more than 250,000 Americans. This is an outrage that will not go unanswered. While we are still waiting to hear from the administration all the final details, we understand at this time that Section 735, the Monsanto biotech rider is intact.

Regretfully, President Obama failed to live up to his oath to protect the American people and our constitution.

Today we’re calling on President Obama to issue an executive order to call for the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods.

Tell President Obama that you're outraged that he signed the Monsanto Protection Act and it's time to label GMOs!

On Surviving a Brain Cancer Death Sentence

There should be more persons writing testimonies of brain cancer such as Mr. Schneiderman. And – heavy users of cell phones! – those who engage in long conversations each day – especially younger persons – should pay heed to the possibility that they too may one day be diagnosed with a brain tumor. Reading this article, I think of Adon, my companion who died of mesothelioma, cancer of the pleura from exposure to asbestos. He, too died the day of his diagnosis. He survived 10 months with a diminished quality of life.  He loved sitting by the lake in Divonne, watching the water - rare moments where he experienced peace.

On Surviving a Brain Cancer Death Sentence
by Davis Schneiderman, Huffington Post, 20 March 2013

Valerie Harper [the star of the Mary Tyler Moore Show announced this month that she has incurable brain cancer] received a death sentence. Just like my father.

And while I hope that she lives as long as she can, comfortably and with dignity, "surviving" these types of cancer does not always mean what we would like it to. We may treasure the image of the celebrity medical survivor in (pre-doping scandal) Lance Armstrong, Sharon Osbourne, Melissa Etheridge, or any number of other public figures who make triumphant or even quiet returns to their old public lives.

Yet we don't often talk about what it means to survive without thriving.

Victims of Electrosmog Reveal Their Everyday Reality

The gap between general perception and reality grows wider day by day. Here is an interesting testimony – not very reassuring – from Barbara Eidling, the person responsible for the hotline at the association, “Die Bürgerwelle” in Germany. (Text translated from French.)

Thanks to the “Bürgerwelle” hotline for which I’ve been responsible for more than a decade, I have become aware of the spectacular increase in health problems due to the effects of the new wireless technologies.

Every day I receive calls for help from affected persons. Their number is constantly increasing. For them, escape from waves is almost no longer possible, whether it be in their workplace, in universities, in schools, in kindergartens, or in apartments in residential areas. DECT phones, Wi-Fi, power line transmissions, (PLC), LTE mobile phone antennas and smartphones are nearly everywhere.

France: Electromagnetic Waves: The Precautionary Principle Soon to be Applied in Schools

Voted 19 March 2013 at the French National Assembly (Lower House), an amendment of the law stipulates that the establishment of the digital educational program foreseen by the text favors “wired” connections, that is, Ethernet, rather than Wi-Fi, in order to protect children.  This amendment still has to be passed in the French Senate (Upper House); it is not certain that this will happen because the industrial lobby is powerful and has "contaminated" a number of members of Parliament.

It is the first time that the precautionary principle will be applied in France to children. Failing to succeed with adoption of their draft legislation on electromagnetic waves in January, the ecologist deputies have obtained approval of draft school reform legislation for precautionary measures in schools.

Voted Tuesday at the National Assembly, an amendment of the law stipulates that the public service establishment of the digital educational program foreseen by the text favors “wired” connections, that is, Ethernet, rather than Wi-Fi.

The Naked Truth About MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity)

The Naked Truth About MCS
Published in Deliro.  Thank you to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity on Facebook and the No Fun blog for this article.  The suffering of people with MCS is similar to that of people with EHS (electrohypersensitivity).

We are born naked, they give us cologne, perfumed nappies, clothes washed with softeners, creams with all kinds of possible aromas, and they drive us in plastic strollers while we breathe nice polluted air.

We grow up and they make us believe that we can achieve anything we want, that we can write our future, that the happiness is based in buy everything and the state is here to protect and watch over us, although I had my doubts.

One day, you wake up and nothing has sense. You switch on the table lamp and your eyes get burnt; you open the window and perceive new smells that don’t let you breathe. You turn on the radio and the music booms in your head, so much that you fear it will explode. And you don’t have a hangover. It’s worse. It’s been called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and has come to stay. Your body has said ‘enough’, has been broken and starts rejecting everything that they told you was essential for your happiness. Your life has taken an unexpected turn, your mind changes, your future vanishes, you don’t have physical nor mental energy. The disease forces you to live your life behind a mask and be isolated from the outside world.

European Environment Agency: Mobile Phone Use and Brain Tumor Risk: Early Warnings, Early Actions?

Readers seem to be interested in the 23 January 2013 Report by the European Environment Agency on “Late lessons from early warnings: science, precaution, innovation”.  The report is the second of its type produced by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in collaboration with a broad range of external authors and peer reviewers. The case studies across both volumes of Late lessons from early warnings cover a diverse range of chemical and technological innovations, and highlight a number of systemic problems. The 'Late Lessons Project' illustrates how damaging and costly the misuse or neglect of the precautionary principle can be, using case studies and a synthesis of the lessons to be learned and applied to maximising innovations whilst minimising harms. The report includes discussions on Fukushima and genetically modified oranisms.

The following extract is from Part C: “Emerging Issues” on “Mobile phone use and brain tumor risk; early warning, early actions?” – an excerpt from the Introduction and the full text of the Conclusions.

21 Mobile phone use and brain tumour risk: early warnings, early actions?
by Lennart Hardell, Michael Carlberg and David Gee

Introduction

… The chapter points to mobile phone industry inertia in considering the various studies and taking the IARC carcinogenic classification into account and a failings from the media in providing the public with robust and consistent information on potential health risks. The IARC carcinogenic classification also appears not to have had any significant impact on governments' perceptions of their responsibilities to protect public health from this widespread source of radiation.

Chemtrails: The Consequences of Toxic Metals and Chemical Aerosols on Human Health

"To ask uninformed, although supposedly “well educated” people to reconsider what they think they know about what is really going on –this takes enormous internal strength. It requires profound courage. The basis of this “courage” actually means creating new synaptical pathways in the brain. Without them, we feel scared, nervous…because those new synapses have not yet been created. It takes repeated effort, and, thus, an emerging sense of ease, to create these new synapses.

"If, however, millions of people are already on prescription pharmaceuticals to “calm them down” [long term, what is this doing to their ability to think clearly?] and, in addition, are breathing poisoned air rife with mind-distorting chemicals, then how clearly (if at all) is anyone able to think? How can anyone feel well and safe, if the very air we breathe is deliberately poisoned and is affecting our ability to think cogently? It is already evident that no one in any official capacity is willing to tell the truth... No one seems to have the desire, or courage, or authority to stop this massive poisoning, because it is the secret plan of the elite insiders to deliberately destroy everything we once knew."

For decades, we have known that heavy metals and chemicals can cause grave physical harm. Going back to Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring,” we have known and been amply warned of the serious consequences of using or being exposed to these poisons in our daily activities. Thousands of these are well-documented carcinogens.

Impacts of Radio-frequency Electromagnetic Fields from Cell Phone Towers and Wireless Devices on the Biosystem and Ecosystem

This review by a research team in India was published on 6 January 2013 in Biology and Medicine. It summarizes the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields from mobile phone towers and wireless devices on the biosphere, including plants, amphibians, insects, birds, mammals, and humans. Following are the abstract, introduction, the part on the effects on bees, and the section on electrohypersensitivity.  The review in full may be seen here.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the effect of radio-frequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) from cell towers and wireless devices on the biosphere. Based on current available literature, it is justified to conclude that RF-EMF radiation exposure can change neurotransmitter functions, blood-brain barrier, morphology, electrophysiology, cellular metabolism, calcium efflux, and gene and protein expression in certain types of cells even at lower intensities. The biological consequences of such changes remain unclear. Short-term studies on the impacts of RF-EMF on frogs, honey bees, house sparrows, bats, and even humans are scare and long-term studies are non-existent in India. Identification of the frequency, intensity, and duration of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields causing damage to the biosystem and ecosystem would evolve strategies for mitigation and would enable the proper use of wireless technologies to enjoy its immense benefits, while ensuring one’s health and that of the environment.

Breast Cancer Industry A Scam? Support Education, Not Medication

As someone very skeptical of the “sick care” industry, and having been treated for breast cancer, I find this 2007 article excellent and relevant today. “Breast cancer screening does nothing to educate women how to really prevent breast cancer, nor does it teach women how to change their diets and lifestyles so that breast cancer never develops in the first place. In fact, the strategy of the cancer industry today can be best described as waiting for women to get cancer, then treating it with toxic drugs that generate huge profits for pharmaceutical companies.”

As for fund-raising activities for cancer causes -– “pink” events - “women raising money for cancer industry non-profit groups makes about as much sense as Jews raising money for Hitler. The cancer industry is exploiting these women, using their bodies to generate profits.” Pink events are also promoting products which cause cancer and often sponsored by groups which stand to profit from people getting cancer.

The article goes on to list 18 things which cause cancer and 22 things to prevent cancer. Limiting cell phone use should be added to the prevention list, and women should be warned not to keep cell phones in their bras.

Risks of Electronic Cigarettes

Since sellers of electronic cigarettes are so persistently commenting on their positive qualities on this blog, I am inviting these people to read excerpts from articles stating the risks of these devices : from Forbes Magazine and a health site, that lists 10 facts about electronic cigarettes, including safety concerns (inhalation of nicotine), the appeal to children, their not being FDA regulated, the production of secondhand vapors.

Excerpt: « Are Electronic Cigarettes a Safe Alternative for Smokers ? », Forbes magazine, 30 October 2012

A study presented at the European Respiratory Society’s annual meeting in Vienna in February, 2012 demonstrated an abrupt increase in airway resistance leading to a lower level of oxygen in the bloodstream in electronic cigarette users. This could have dangerous effects on people with coronary artery disease who have obstructing plaques in their coronary arteries. In their small study, the Athens researchers studied the effects of the electronic cigarettes on 8 people who never smoked, along with 24 smokers-11 with normal lung function and 13 participants with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study participants all used an electronic cigarette for 10 minutes. Researchers then conducted measurements of airway resistance and lung function. All participants had a sudden increase in airway resistance which lasted about 10 minutes. Interestingly, the increase was more noticeable in smokers than non smokers, although the effect seen in people with COPD was less immediate in nature. The researchers stated that it was unclear whether this increase in resistance had any potential long term effects.

Bees and Flowers Under Threat

Scientists at Britain’s University of recently discovered that bees and flowers participate in a mutually beneficial electromagnetism1 that results not only in the pollination and proliferation of the plants, but the nourishment of the bees and the hives they call home.

A 2009 experiment by scientists in India found that the decimated bee population in Kerala was caused by electromagnetic (EM) waves emitted immediately after the installation of mobile phone towers and cell phones throughout the state. The EM waves essentially crippled the "navigational skills" of worker bees, according to lead researcher Dr. Sainuddin Pattazhy. The worker bees simply didn’t return to their hive when a cell phone was placed near it, leaving the queens alone with the eggs. In the experiment, the entire colony collapsed within ten days.5Adding to the mystery, parasites, wildlife and other bees, which would normally raid the abandoned hives, would not go near the collapsed colonies. Dr. Pattazhy said that if towers and mobile phones further increase, honey bees might be wiped out in 10 years.

Radiation has also been found to cause damage to the nervous system of the bee, impeding its ability to fly. Cell phones may create a resonance effect that interferes with the movement patterns bees use as a kind of language. That’s a serious problem since, in the US alone, bees contribute $15 billion in annual agriculture revenue and a third of the county’s food supply depends on bees to pollinate crops. Over 100,000 people in Kerala are engaged in apiculture and the dwindling worker bee population poses a threat to their livelihood.

Radiation of iPad with Wi-Fi ON but no Internet Connection

All parents concerned about their children's health should view this video and read what follows about the radiation emitted by iPads with Wi-Fi on but with no Internet connection. Doctors' groups around the world have spoken up to call for precaution against wireless radiation and for reduction of exposure, especially on children, youth, pregnant women and babies.

NEW! Radiation of iPad with WiFi ON but no Internet Connection (2 min. - 7 March 2013)

This Video: Measuring the pulsed microwave radiation from an iPad with an Acoustimeter. The WiFi function of the iPad is turned on, but the iPad is not used for internet browsing. Many people use the iPad for apps that don't require internet access but leave the WiFi function on, thus unknowingly blasting microwave frequencies at themsevles. Such radiation level exceeds the maximum of the Acoustimeter every few seconds. When measured with another RF meter, it was shown to be several times HIGHER than an iPhone's radiation during talking transmission. We have also measured the magnetic fields at the back of the iPad and found that it was high at 15-20 mG compared to the safe level of 3 mG.

Wireless Technology is Fatal to Bees

The advocacy group, Next-Up published an article in French on 7 February 2013 entitled, “Wireless Technology is Fatal to Bees”. The article mentions the document by Ulrich Warnke, “Bees, Birds and Mankind : Destroying Nature by Electrosmog” from 2007. Dr. Daniel Favre, Vice-President of ARA (Association romande alerte aux ondes électromagnétiques, Morges, Switzerland – www.alerte.ch ) will deliver a presentation on « Influence of Electromagnetic Waves on the Behavior of Honeybees » during the 9th National Congress on Electrosmog, Bern, 20 April 2013. Here is the study by Dr. Favre, published in the journal “Apidologie” in 2011.

Here is the Abstract of Dr. Favre's presentation:

Abstract:  Influence of electromagnetic waves on the behaviour of honeybees

In recent years, reports of a global loss of honey bees have risen owing to increased colony collapse disorder (CCD), which results in the extreme and sudden break down of colonies with no previous evidence of disease or parasitic infestation. CCD has serious implications for the production of many fruits and vegetables, which rely on insect pollination. Mites, pesticides, reduced immunity, bacterial and viral infections, genetically modified agricultural products and farming practices are suspected of playing a role in the disappearance of entire colonies.

Two Incidents of Pilots Fainting in Flight on Alaska Airlines

This “comment” is written by Dr. Todd Curtis, licensed pilot and Founder of AirSafe.com. He was a flight test engineer in the U.S. Air Force, and while an airline safety engineer at Boeing, was directly involved in numerous plane crash investigations. He comments on the two recent incidents of Alaska Airlines pilots losing consciousness in flight. “Evidently, all these Alaska Airlines jets are WiFi-enabled.” He believes that the appropriate authorities, including the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) should take a serious look at in-flight Wi-Fi.

Dr. Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University, Canada, and expert on the biological effects of electromagnetic pollution, comments:

"The cockpit of an airplane is already electromagnetically polluted by low frequency (400 Hz) magnetic fields associated with the internal wires (that typically run through conduits behind both the pilot and co-pilot) and that are generated by the heating of the windows (to keep them flexible); to the radar; to the "coming soon" Wi-Fi radiation. That combined with being in polluted airports, cosmic radiation, changes in time-zones, job-stress, and sleep issues may produce the perfect storm...

"There are certain professions that are responsible for the lives of many and pilots and co-pilots are near the top of that list. We need to take this situation seriously if we want to avert a disaster. Even in the event that we are wrong about electrosmog making pilots faint, practicing good electromagnetic hygiene on board civilian and military aircrafts is a good idea."

Partner Communications, which operates in Israel under the name Orange, will pay NIS 400,000 [~$100,000] to a customer who contracted cancer in his ear.

Partner Communications, which operates in Israel under the Orange brand name, has reached a settlement with a customer who claims he contracted cancer after using one of their devices.

The customer, who is in his 50s, sued Partner in May, claiming that intensive use of the device resulted in an aggressive lymphoma near his left ear. Partner agreed to pay NIS 400,000 in an out-of-court compromise settlement.
