With Breast Cancer Discovered at Age 26, a Young Woman Confronts Her Mortality

Kathryn Petrides
A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, Feb. 27, 2013) suggests that advanced breast cancer is showing up more frequently in younger women between the ages of 25 and 39. Over 30 years ago, roughly 1.5 young women in 100,000 were diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Three decades later, that rate had almost doubled to 2.9 women per 100,000.

by Kathryn Petrides, The Washington Post, 13 May 2013

It was on the weekend of my 25th birthday that my boyfriend alerted me to a lump in my left breast. At first dismissive of his concern, I eventually promised to see my gynecologist. I was due for my annual exam anyway.

About three weeks later, I walked away from the doctor visit confident and reassured. My gynecologist conducted a breast exam, made note of the lump’s size and sent me on my way. She didn’t order a mammogram or an ultrasound or suggest a follow-up appointment.

“She said considering my age and family history, it’s probably just a cyst or a fibro-something and to keep an eye on it,” I reported back to my boyfriend.

Exploding Cell Phones Prompt Warnings

Already in 2004 when this article was published, there were reports of exploding cell phones. Yes, they were older models and cell phone carriers and manufacturers were already addressing the issue. U.S. phone makers and carriers were saying most fires and explosions were being caused by counterfeit batteries. Some consumer advocates were saying the cause goes beyond bad batteries. They point to the increasing pressure on battery and phone makers to fit more capabilities into small instruments.  “If you’re cramming more and more power in a small space, what you’re making is a small bomb,” said Carl Hilliard, president of the California-based Wireless Consumers Alliance, which has been tracking incidents of cell phone fires and explosions.

Monsanto Teams Up With Blackwater to Infiltrate Activist Groups

Academi (formerly Blackwater) was purchased by private investors.  The heavily sourced article written by Jeremy Scahill in The Nation actually says nothing about Monsanto buying Blackwater.  What the articles does say, however, is that Monsanto and Blackwater are indeed working together to target anti-Monsanto activists and organizations.  In 2007, Academi, then Blackwater, was served notice that it faced investigations for war crimes after 17 unarmed Iraqi civilians were killed in a hail of bullets by its security guards in Baghdad.  In 2012, Academi (Blackwater) admitted to the key facts behind 17 federal criminal charges, including illegal exports and unauthorized possession of automatic weapons.  Blackwater, now known as Academi LLC, agreed to pay a $7.5 million fine on top of a $42 million settlement it reached earlier regarding civil arms export violations.

There has been a great deal of publicity over the potential purchase of Blackwater (now known as Academi, and Xe before that) by mega corporation Monsanto.

Saliva Holds Cancer Clues in Heavy Cell Phone Users, Study Finds High Oxidative Stress Levels

Saliva Holds Cancer Clues In Heavy Cell Phone Users, Study Finds High Oxidative Stress Levels
by Zoe Mintz, International Business Times, 29 July 2013

Human spit may be transparent, but it contains a host of information that can tell someone’s risk of developing cancer, according to a new study from Tel Aviv University.

In an effort to find a link between cell phone usage and cancer risk, researchers found clues in the saliva of cell phone users. Since mobile phones are typically placed on the side of the face, they are close to the salivary gland.

By studying the saliva of heavy cell phone users, scientists found higher levels of oxidative stress – a process where the body experiences cumulative damage by free radicals that were imbalanced by antioxidants – which is considered a major risk factor for cancer.

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) and Lipitor - 2

by Duane Graveline, M.D., MPH, People’s Pharmacy, 24 July 2013

(from 1997 through May 15, 2012)

FDA has opened the shelves of MedWatch to those of us wishing to review for ourselves the status of statin adverse drug reports (ADRs). This has been all the more imperative since FDA has been extremely reluctant to report side effect data on the statin class of drugs.

I was last able to access MedWatch data in 2006. Following that, in the beginning of 2007, my access to MedWatch data was denied despite legal pressure from my lawyers. Even in 2006 the process had not been easy, for it meant I had to tackle the immense challenge of reviewing manually some 64,000 Lipitor ADRs using the "find" mechanism on my PC. This was necessary, I was told, since the appropriate software for reading MedWatch data was available only to FDA and drug company officials. The rest of us had to be content with the time-honored and accurate but painfully slow process of counting each case one by one using the search mechanism on our PC.

Statins and Transient Global Amnesia - 1

Dr. Duane Graveline, aerospace
medical research scientist
Dr. Duane E. Graveline was a family doctor, aerospace medical research scientist, USAF flight surgeon and NASA astronaut. Dr. Graveline interned at the famed Walter Reed Army hospital. He became a flight surgeon and did space medical research on zero gravity deconditioning. He held a unique position as medical analyst of the Soviet bioastronautics program, NASA flight controller and finally, in 1965, was selected as a NASA scientist astronaut. Dr. Graveline still is affiliated with the space program as consultant to the special cosmic radiation hazards to man of "return to the moon and on to Mars."

In his article, he delivers a personal testimony of his experience of transient global amnesia (TGA) when taking the statin Lipitor (atorvastatin). Pfizer, the manufacturer of Lipitor, estimates that 35 million persons are now taking this drug.  Dr. Graveline believes this is the reason for “an epidemic of statin-associated TGA” in the United States since 1999. “Everyone should be aware that any statin could cause TGA or interfere with cognitive function,” he writes.

The Radiation Poisoning of America

Several articles have been posted on this blog by Amy Worthington on the same subject. Thank you to FB friends and Next-Up for reviving this excellent portrait of the wireless radiation poisoning of America.

The Radiation Poisoning of America (document in full)
by Amy Worthington November 17, 2007

Prior to 1996, the wireless age was not coming online fast enough, primarily because communities had the authority to block the siting of cell towers. But the Federal Communications Act of 1996 made it
nearly impossible for communities to stop construction of cell towers "even if they pose threats to public health and the environment. Since the decision to enter the age of wireless convenience was politically
determined for us, we have forgotten well-documented safety and environmental concerns and, with a devil-may-care zeal that is lethally short-sighted, we have incorporated into our lives every wireless toy that comes on the market. We behave as if we are addicted to radiation. Our addiction to cell phones has led to harder "drugs" like wireless Internet. And now we are bathing in the radiation that our wireless enthusiasm has unleashed. Those who are addicted, uninformed, corporately biased and politically-influenced may dismiss our scientifically-sound concerns about the apocalyptic hazards of wireless radiation. But we must not. Instead, we must sound the alarm.

Swisscom CEO found dead in apparent suicide: police
Reuters, 23 July 2013

(Reuters) - Swisscom's chief executive Carsten Schloter was found dead at his home near Freiburg on Tuesday morning and initial investigations suggest that he killed himself, police said.

The Swiss telecoms group said that out of consideration for his family no further details were being disclosed. The head of Swisscom's domestic operations, Urs Schaeppi, would take over running the company temporarily.

"We can confirm that the first elements of the investigation make us think it was a suicide. It is impossible to say at this stage how long the investigation will take," said Pierre-Andre Waeber, spokesman at the cantonal police in Freiburg.

"Proceedings of the Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: from Chernobyl to Fukushima" (Geneva, 12-13 May 2013) Now Available Online

Proceedings of IW “Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection – Now on line
Independent WHO, 22 June 2013

We are pleased to announce the online publication of the English-language version of the “Proceedings of the Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: from Chernobyl to Fukushima,” a conference which was organized on 12 and 13 May 2012 in Geneva by the Collective IndependentWHO – Health and Nuclear Energy. A printed version of the Proceedings will be available in mid-July.

The Forum brought together independent scientists and citizens from Belarus, Russia, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Japan, as well as politicians and journalists. As participants demonstrated, the scandal of the omerta on the effects of radiation on health continues, more than two years after the beginning of the Fukushima disaster on 11 March 2011. There are more and more sick people in the affected areas, including children. Citizens, Japanese doctors and independent scientists are obliged to organize in the face of the shortcomings of the authorities and international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), which is still subject to the agreement that it signed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 28 May 1959.

U.S. Soldier and Defense Contractor: "I Hereby Resign in Protest"

I Hereby Resign in Protest Effective Immediately
by Brandon Toy, via Common Dreams, 16 July 2013

I hereby resign in protest effective immediately.

I have served the post-911 Military Industrial complex for 10 years, first as a soldier in Baghdad, and now as a defense contractor.

I have always believed that if every foot soldier threw down his rifle war would end. I hereby throw mine down.At the time of my enlistment, I believed in the cause. I was ignorant, naïve, and misled. The narrative, professed by the state, and echoed by the mainstream press, has proven false and criminal. We have become what I thought we were fighting against.

Recent revelations by fearless journalists of war crimes including counterinsurgency “dirty” wars, drone terrorism, the suspension of due process, torture, mass surveillance, and widespread regulatory capture have shed light on the true nature of the current US Government. I encourage you to read more about these topics at the links I have provided below.

Fukushima: Disturbing Transformations of Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers, and Animals Exposed to Radiation

This radish has taken
the form of a hand.
This message has just been posted on the MSN site, the original source of this information: "CORRECTION:  A post on a website in Japan reports that these images aren’t related to the Fukushima disaster. We regret passing along the misinformation." We leave it to readers to decide for themselves or do more research.  It could also be that pro-nuclear countries are trying to spread misinformation by denying the truth.

See also these photos from a South Korean Website - can anyone verify that these are from the Fukushima area after the nuclear catastrophe?

Fukushima: Disturbing Transformations of Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers, and Animals Exposed to Radiation
published by Jérémy Garandeau, gentside.com, 16 July 2013
(translated from French by the Editor of this blog)

On 11 March 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant liberated radioactive particles following the earthquake in eastern Japan. Today, the first consequences of this exposure have been noticed especially in fruits and vegetables, and also in some flowers and animals.

This ear of corn has
an abnormal shape.
On 11 March 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in eastern Japan did not resist the earthquake which took place a few hours earlier off the coast, provoking a tsunami. The automatic shutdown of the reactors in operation caused a freeing of nuclear particles, forming a cloud. If the Japanese Government ensured that all was under control in the days that followed this catastrophe, nature was seriously affected by the incident. Vegetables as well as animals would bear the consequences of this exposure to radiation, as relays the American site, MSN.

European Union Suspicious of Fracking Industry's Empty Promises

European Union Suspicious of Fracking Industry’s Empty Promises
Food & Water Europe, 11 July 2013

Today, members of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee overwhelmingly—51 in favor, 18 against—endorsed a proposal to impose a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for all shale gas drilling activities in the European Union (EU). This is in line with the Parliament’s resolution on the environmental impacts of shale gas, voted in November 2012, which called on the European Commission to include “projects including hydraulic fracturing in Annex I of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive.”¹

For Food & Water Europe, this is a major victory, as Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) showed a healthy dose of suspicion about the empty promises of the shale gas industry about its ability to guarantee so-called “safe fracking.” Imposing a mandatory EIA for shale gas drilling is the start of adapting the EU regulatory framework to the ugly reality of unconventional hydrocarbons in the EU. This vote demonstrates a resolve among MEPs to avoid the negative impacts of an out-of-control boom in shale gas drilling in the U.S.

Study: Nuclear Plant Shutdown Results in 4,319 Fewer Cancer Cases
by Brian Krans, Yahoo Health, 28 March 2013

Closing a nuclear reactor in California has prevented an estimated 4,319 cases of cancer in the past 20 years, according to a new study released Thursday. Researchers studied the population of the state capitol of Sacramento, an area with more than 1.4 million people living within 25 miles of the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant.

Using 20 years worth of data, researchers found an overall drop in the incidence of all cancers, including six of the 16 most common types. The sharpest drop came within a decade of the plant's closing in 1989.

“These findings suggest that the closing of Rancho Seco reduced the risk to health for local residents, and provides a basis for conducting analyses on potential long-term health changes,” the study, published in the journal Biomedicine International, states.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and War Veterans

War takes a terrible toll on everyone:  soldiers, civilians,
families on both sides of the conflict.
"People who suffer from PTSD and depression are significantly more likely to take their own lives. One hundred twenty six U.S. veterans kill themselves each week – 6,552 each year. Since 2001, more Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have committed suicide than the number of soldiers lost in combat."

The human cost our veterans are paying.

When veterans come back with PTSD and depression, they face even greater challenges at home. Aside from the physical and psychological pain that come with reliving horrific events, there’s a numbness and an inability to reengage in life. Relationships are strained. Normalcy is unattainable. For many, it all begins to fall apart.

"No Country in the World Completely Protects Its Citizens Against Dangerous Chemicals in Products"

Consumer Alert
by Sascha Gabizon, Executive Director, Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF), July 2013 (This article was published in The Indian Consumer magazine.)

In a perfect world all consumers would go shopping with the confidence that the authorities would not allow any dangerous substances in consumer products which might damage their or their children’s health irreversibly, resulting in lasting disorders or even death. Unfortunately, there is not even one country in the world where consumers are sufficiently protected by legislation from chemicals in products which can harm their health. Too many children have been born with birth and developmental defects because they were exposed, both in the womb and first years of their lives, to hazardous chemical substances in food, toys, clothing, furniture, paint and building materials.

Chemicals are a complex topic. There are more than 100,000 chemicals in the market, of which several thousands are potentially harmful to human health. The UNEP Global Chemicals Outlook 2012 estimates that each year 900,000 people die from exposure to hazardous chemicals and pesticides, and another two million fall ill.1

Worldwide Honey Bee Collapse: A Lesson in Ecology

Worldwide Honey Bee Collapse: A Lesson in Ecology
by Rex Weyler, Greenpeace, 11 June 2013

We know what is killing the bees. Worldwide Bee Colony Collapse is not as big a mystery as the chemical companies claim. The systemic nature of the problem makes it complex, but not impenetrable. Scientists know that bees are dying from a variety of factors—pesticides, drought, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit, air pollution, global warming and so forth. The causes of collapse merge and synergize, but we know that humanity is the perpetrator, and that the two most prominent causes appear to be pesticides and habitat loss.

European Citizens' Initiative: Application of the Precautionary Principle for Electromagnetic Waves

Soon, Application of the Precautionary Principle for Electromagnetic Waves?
by Stéphanie Sanchez, Basta Mag, 5 July 2013 (translation by Meris Michaels). See original document in French here.

What can we do to get the European authorities to seriously look into the issue of application of the precautionary principle regarding electromagnetic waves? Several organizations and groups decided to launch a “European Citizens’ Initiative” (ECI), which would allow, with one million signatures from seven different countries, to put pressure on the European Commission. Stéphane Sanchez, from the French association “Sans Onde”, participated at the end of June in the setting up of a support committee for this Initiative.

Delegates from Sweden, Spain and France travelled to Madrid. Others, from Portugal, Belgium and Italy, declared their solidarity through videos and texts. Six representatives from six countries of the European Union were thus present to relay a message aimed at protecting citizens from harm, today proven, caused by electromagnetic waves. In order for the European Citizens’ Initiative (ICE) to be activated, seven citizens from seven different member countries must meet and collect one million signatures in twelve months. The European Commission would then be obliged to place the subject raised by citizens on its agenda.

Installation of Wi-Fi in Long-Term Care Homes

Residence "La Gracieuse" near Morges, Switzerland
This excellent letter written by Lorraine Penner to the long-term care task force, City of Toronto, was originally posted in April 2012.  In her letter, she raises the issue of installation of Wi-Fi in long-term care homes.  At the assisted living place on Long Island (Sunrise) where my 98-year-old mother lives, Wi-Fi has been installed in the ground floor common areas of the home.  Many residents with serious health issues (dementia, diabetes, cardio-vascular problems...) spend much of the day in this area.

Ms. Penner writes, "Many residents of long-term care homes are non-verbal, and unable to articulate the discomforts or suffering that they may be experiencing.  There has been no effort on the part of the long-term care home management to monitor the effects of wifi on the residents, or to  determine who might be the more electrosensitive among them. As someone  who finds it difficult to spend even two hours in the home since the  wireless technology began broadcasting, I find it most distressing that  the most vulnerable citizens among us should have this forced upon them.  I choose my words carefully and do not exaggerate when I say that for some of the residents, the constant exposure to rf radiation will be a form of torture. It is the most serious abuse and most serious violation of the rights of residents to safety and comfort..."

The issue of installation of Wi-Fi in long-term care homes is becoming a serious concern in such homes in other countries. Recently, during a tour of a similar residence near Morges, Switzerland, the director proudly announced that Wi-Fi would soon be installed.  In the city of Geneva, cell phone antennas are being placed on the rooftops of long-term care homes, as many as three in the case of Les Franchises (69 apartments). (Ms. Penner's letter has been re-arranged, to place her personal testimony of her father at the beginning.)

Will the GMO-Breast Cancer Link Be Pink-Washed Away?

This article was written just after publication of the 2012 GMO / Roundup study produced by the French research team of Gilles-Eric Séralini. “We all need to wake up. Breast Cancer Awareness Month needs to be renamed Pinkwashing Awareness Month, and the true causes and cures for cancer disseminated to those folks whose very lives depends on the availability of such information. The carcinogenicity of Roundup herbicide and GMO food will continued to be denied by self-appointed authoritative organizations, non-governmental and governmental alike.”

Will The GMO-Breast Cancer Link Be Pink-Washed Away?
by Sayer Ji, Founder, GreenMedinfo.com, 21 September 2012

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) less than two weeks away, the latest bombshell GMO/Roundup study produced by a French research team, and presently making international headlines, is well-timed. The researchers found, in the first long-term GM corn and Roundup feeding study of its kind, that female rats, exposed to concentrations well below official safety limits, developed massive, progressive mammary tumors which either lead to premature death, or required euthanasia due to their great suffering.

Worms Evolve Immunity to GMO Corn, Insecticide Use Goes Up

Sales of corn insecticide made by Syngenta more than doubled in 2012 as a result of “increased grower awareness” of rootworm resistance in the U.S.  The rootworms have developed resistance to seeds that have been genetically modified for one root worm trait; Monsanto says it will be phasing out that type of seed. Rootworms who develop resistance to one type of seed can certainly do the same for another.

Worms Evolve Immunity to GMO Corn, Insecticide Use Goes Up
by Kristina Chew, Care2.com, 28 May 2013

Genetically modified corn was created so that farmers planting it could minimize their use of pesticides. Since Monsanto’s Bt corn, which has been genetically modified to resist rootworm, was introduced in 2003, farmers have been using fewer pesticides. But recently, they have had to turn back to these again because the rootworms have, in under a decade, started to develop immunity to Bt corn.

South Korea: Teens Who Are Addicted to Net, Mobile Devices, Now Get Cognitive Disorders

A 15-year-old had symptoms of early onset dementia due to intense exposure to digital technology. Since the age of five, Kim was tethered to either the television or the computer. He is an avid computer game lover.  “His brain’s ability to transfer information to long-term memory has been impaired because of his heavy exposure to digital gadgets,” said psychiatrist Kim Dae-jin at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in southern Seoul, who diagnosed Kim and is treating him.

India: Actor Juhi Chawla Raises Awareness of Dangers of Exposure to Mobile Tower Radiation

Juhi Chawla and fellow activist Prakash Munshi taking the
journalist through a presentation on the dangers of
exposure to mobile tower radiation.
Indian actor Juhi Chawla is an active anti-radiation campaigner. Her advocacy began three years ago when her husband Jai Mehta drew her attention to the 14 mobile phone antennas near their home. She began reading up on electromagnetic radiation. With the help of other activists, the antennas were removed from the neighborhood. Chawla’s resolve is showing results. A recent meeting of 30 citizen groups with the Department of Telecom and civic body representatives resulted in assurance that an independent advisory committee, not funded by the telecoms industry, would be set up to guide state and local authorities on the issue. Chawla also wishes to make it mandatory for a warning to appear in movie scenes showing characters using mobile phones. “It is important to educate residents [and cell phone users] rather than wake up 20 years later and print ugly pictures on cell phone boxes, like we are doing now with tobacco packaging,” says Chawla. The following two articles describe her commitment to raise awareness of the dangers of mobile phone and tower radiation.

Do You Want To Be RFID Chipped? Another Hidden Secret in Obama-Care

It’s bad enough that in the United States, new-born babies are being injected with the hepatitis B vaccine. The latest direction in “health care” is chipping human populations. This “comes from the hidden part of the Obama ‘health care’ reform. Who reads more than 1,000 pages of mostly incomprehensible ‘doublethink’ drivel? The Senate Healthcare bill HR3200 was passed in 2010, and requires the implant of an RFID chip in every American. This chip will be inserted into our skin and linked to all our banking, medical, and other personal documents."

It concerns “the new handicap” provoked by electromagnetic activity. The exchange opens with the reply from Mr. Berger to Mr. Rieder’s letter. (Translated from French by the Editor of this blog.)

Subject: EHS is not at all recognized as a handicap in Switzerland
Date: 17 June 2013

Dear Mr. Rieder,

Thank you for your reply which merits being clear and honest.

Summing up the situation, EHS persons are a minority – 3 to 35% of the population, according to severity and various sources – whom we ridicule before the magnitude of current electromagnetic pollution and the fantastic profits it is generating. Note that countries like Sweden or Germany, recognize the microwave syndrome as a handicap or illness…

Wake up, wireless addicts! This article, listing 22 health effects from exposure to wireless technology: cell phones, mobile phone antennas, Wi-Fi… was written in early 2007. Today, more and more independent scientific studies are affirming these potential health effects.

“The cell phone industry makes 100's of billions of dollars in profits every year. They have the money and the power to influence politicians, the media, and even the research. Unethical researchers receive mass funding from this industry and are pressured to tell you it's safe while the researchers who inform us of its dangers have consistently had their funding cut. Over 6000 German doctors have signed "The Freiburger Appeal" after recognizing a connection between many of the symptoms listed above and exposure to microwave radiation and other EMR and after the German government has failed to act to protect its citizenry. The only way the cell phone industry gets its power is because consumers pay them their money. They have created an imaginary need or addiction. But if you heed the information above, then you will realize that you do not need this "unnecessary evil" - or rather you need it like you need a brain tumor. As a consumer you have the power to affect change. Hence, you are either part of the problem or part of the solution! You can decide. You have a choice - that is - unless you are Unconscious!” [Last part of article which follows].

“Unconscious”, yes!  Digital Dementia is declaring itself in heavy users of wireless technology.

While dementia is a disease that typically plagues the elderly, a new type of cognitive condition is affecting younger individuals in their early 20s and teens – a disorder known as “digital dementia.”

Digital dementia is characterized as the deterioration of brain function as a result of the overuse of digital technology, such as computers, smart phones and Internet use in general, Medical Daily reported. This excess use of technology leads to unbalanced brain development, as heavy users are more likely to overdevelop their left brains, leaving their right brains underdeveloped.

At the Blaise-Cendrars High School, wi-fi is not taken for granted

Teachers at the Blaise-Cendrars High School in La Chaux-de-Fonds, have all recently decided that there will be no wi-fi, neither in the cafeteria nor in classrooms as a precautionary approach to everyone’s health. “In the beginning, we had selected installation of a wireless network for the sake of educational convenience”, explains Patrick Herrmann, Director of the establishment. “We wanted to allow teachers and students to work on tablets and other computers in the cafeteria and in classrooms. The work had already begun.”

What is there to be afraid of?

It was seeing an installer working on the site that a certain number of teachers reacted and asked for the opening of a discussion on the subject of reverting to wi-fi. “There was an impassioned debate between partisans and opponents. We proposed that each side prepare arguments.” After these were distributed before the teachers’ meeting, the latter were called to vote their preference. “The adversaries of wi-fi were in the majority. Worth mentioning is that there was a large number of abstentions.”
