EHS : Intolerance to Electromagnetic Fields: Medical Description

The EHS & MCS site is dedicated to medical practitioners and public health researchers, as well as to people affected by the intolerance syndrome to electromagnetic fields and-or to chemical products, with or without electrohypersensitivity syndrome (EHS) and/or multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome (MCS), and to all those willing to learn more about them in order to better protect themselves.

Extract from this article:
"It is for the child, because of its special biological vulnerability, and later for the adolescent that risks seem to be most severe, with the possibility of delayed appearance of major psychological abnormalities manifested by dyslexia, attention deficit disorders, concentration and memory attachment at school, which may be added to behavioural problems... completely misunderstood by parents and teachers."

SICEM Medical Description
from EHS & MCS site : http://www.ehs-mcs.org/en/

The ARTAC [Association for Therapeutic Research Against Cancer] has been working for several years with Professor Lennart Hardell – a Swedish epidemiologist internationally renowned for his research in the field of environmental cancers - in order to clarify the biological mechanisms by which electromagnetic fields induce carcinogenic effects.

The ARTAC team could thus describe the syndrome of intolerance to electromagnetic fields (SICEM) on clinical and biological aspects from a patient cohort starting in 2008.

Electromagnetic fields involved in the occurrence of this syndrome include the entire spectrum, from extremely low frequencies to the highest radio frequencies, such as now defined by extension. Thus are concerned not only electromagnetic fields emitted by high or very high voltage lines, but also the television or radio antennas and all forms of relay antennas, and in terms of individual or collective use, laptops, Wifi and Wimax systems, computers, wireless phones such as DECT etc ... In fact, what matters is not so much the type of emission of the electromagnetic field, than the whole fields emitted, whatever the source is, ie the electromagnetic smog in which we live, in other words, not only the proximity of the source (s) to the body and its intensity, but also and especially the exposure duration, knowing that some subjects are more sensitive than others for biological reasons under investigation.

The SICEM evolves in three successive phases.

At the beginning, sin an inaugural way headaches occur often enough transient tinnitus become permanent, abnormalities of the superficial sensitivity and/or deep notably cutaneous pain sensation (dysesthesia, causalgia) or muscular pains (myualgia) in parts of the body exposed to electromagnetic fields and the occurrence of false dizziness, more rarely Miniere’s type dizziness and mainly almost constant, attention and concentration disorders and short term memory loss, also called “fixing memory capacity””. At this very rich mainly neurological symptomatology, may be associated vegetative sympathicomimetic symptoms like chest tightness, and tachycardia or tachyarrhythmia and digestive disorders such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, all of which can lead to the occurrence of real discomfort, however, without loss of consciousness.

Then comes the state phase, characterized by a triad of symptoms of insomnia, chronic fatigue and possibly depression. This second step is possibly enamelled of irritability and verbal abuse and sometimes suicidal tendencies, whereas in all cases, inaugural symptoms may recur in a acute or sub acute manner, whenever the patient is re exposed to electromagnetic fields including very low intensities.

The evolution in distance – third phase – is the central point. This one depends on the type of treatment used and especially on precautionary or eviction measures that will or will not have been be taken in time.

It is for the child, because of its special biological vulnerability, and later for the adolescent that risks seem to be most severe, with the possibility of delayed appearance of major psychological abnormalities manifested by the dyslexia, attention deficit disorders, concentration and memory attachment at school, which may be added of behavioural problems then completely misunderstood by parents and teachers. However, from the beginning may appear before the troubles intolerance can become such that the child can no longer enter his class, refuses to go to school, without knowing precisely the reasons and even when they are known, if he is exposed to magnetic fields at small amplitudes.

The existence of wifi and the proximity antennas are mainly concerned in this context. For these children, in case of persistent exposure, the risk of subsequent psychosis can not be excluded, although in the current state we do not have proof, likewise there are some risks in the case of exposure of pregnant women to such electromagnetic fields, with implications of possible addition to the possibility of spontaneous abortions, the existence in their babies of serious psychoneurologic manifestations, currently being studied by various teams in the world.

For adults, the evolution can be towards a complete regression of symptoms in case of early withdrawal of electromagnetic exposure or to a confusional syndrome of varying intensity, involving memory loss, occurrence of "absences (4)" and spatiotemporal disorientation, or finally to a true state of dementia which can be similar to Alzheimer's disease in young subjects

Note that in our series, for several patients with multiple sclerosis prolonged use of the mobile immediately activated a new outbreak of the disease and in three others, the implementation of prolonged contact with electromagnetic fields seems to have been the origin of breast cancer in two of them and a relapse after thirty years of remission in another it is of course too early to ascertain with precision the evolution of such a syndrome, but as shown in Figure 1, the extremely rapid growth of its impact in the Member States of the European Union for which we have already epidemiological data and the severity of symptoms as observed already in clinical practice, undoubtedly require urgent measures to public health.

EHS & MCS site

This site is dedicated to medical practitioners and public health researchers, as well as to people affected by the intolerance syndrome to electromagnetic fields and-or to chemical products, with or without electrohypersensitivity syndrome (EHS) and/or multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome (MCS), and to all thosewilling to learn more about them in order to better protect themselves.

This Website is the result of many international research collaborations and French experiment conductedsince 2008 by doctors and researchers among several hundred patients cases clinically and biologically investigated on that purpose.

The goals of this site are :

- To inform medical professionals about the medical and scientific reality of these new pathologies and on the necessity to take care of these patients as best as possible

- To help people move towards a possible diagnosis of EHS or MCS

- To explain the mechanisms underlying these diseases in order to better protect oneself and avoid them ifpossible,

- To provide both medical and practical solutions to enable a better living with these conditions,

- To review the state of current scientific knowledge related to the effects of electromagnetic fields on human health.

This site is powered by ARTAC (Association For Therapeutic Research Against Cancer ), a non-profitassociation for medical research founded in 1984 under the initiative of Professor Belpomme, French oncologist. ARTAC has been dedicating since 2008 part of its research to understanding the mechanisms of intolerance syndrome to electromagnetic fields (SICEM) and Multiple Chemical Sensiitivity (MCS) and developping treatments.
