After taking a crack on regular towers, BMC [Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai] puts a ban on 4G mobile towers near schools and hospitals, the towers being three times more powerful and harmful than regular towers. BMC drafts a policy as citizen group protests against excessive radiation from 4G towers.

The policy has been cleared by the Improvement committee and will be implemented after getting a final nod from the civic general body.

According to the policy, the BMC has set a minimum distance of 3 meters between towers and schools. The same shall be implemented near hospitals as well.

Gyanmurti Sharma, chairman of civic law committee said that the 4G mobile towers generate more radiation and should not be allowed in open spaces. "Allowing it on roads will spoil the city's aesthetic look. As such, companies shall have to erect towers on their own property, after getting an approval from BMC," he said.

He further informed that Reliance has gotten permission from the central government to install about three thousand towers of 25 meters in the city

Prakash Munshi, mobile tower activist said that the BMC has no jurisdiction on the mobile tower policy. "The government, dealing with the policy, has to clear their jurisdiction on the guidelines declared by the state government," Munshi said.

The committee said that the authorities should not insist on telecom operators getting the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearance to put up cell towers in coastal areas.

It has further suggested that there should be no need to specifically seek the consent of residents of the top floor of a building where a mobile antenna is to be installed, and that the permission of 70 per cent of the residents should suffice.

Rais Shekh, leader of Samajwadi Party in BMC said that the BMC shall not allow 3G and 4G Companies to dig roads. "The BMC shall have to keep a check that the operators are setting cables at the approved lines and appoint an expert to check radiation from the towers," Shekh said.
