Most diseases are linked to the environment
by Émilie Trevert, Le Point, 14 November 2014 (translated by the editor of this blog)

Ten years after the Paris Appeal, the oncologist Dominique Belpomme hopes to have pollution recognized as a « public health crime ».

Chirac’s cancer plan prompted Professor Dominique Belpomme, renowned oncologist, to be the first to open consultations in environmental medicine and to warn about the role of electromagnetic fields in various diseases such as Alzheimer’s. In 2004, along with scientists and ecologists, he launched the Paris Appeal. Ten years later, this Friday [14 November 2014] at UNESCO, an anniversary symposium will be held where Dominique Belpomme hopes to have pollution recognized as a “public health crime”.

Le Point.fr : Ten years ago, you launched the Paris Appeal, an international declaration warning of the dangers of chemical pollution (signed notably by Claude Levi-Strauss and Nobel Prize laureates François Jacob, Jean Dausset and Luc Montagnier, Nicolas Hulot...). What has changed since then?

Dominique Belpomme : There have been more or less direct positive effects, such as the system REACH at the European level (an integrated system of registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemical substances) and the “Grenelle de l’environnement” in France, but this is not sufficient in the face of the serious challenges we have to meet, where the number of victims has considerably increased. What is most serious is the near-total political denial of current scientific data. The medico-scientific revolution has taken place; we now know that most diseases are linked to environmental factors, and not just factors related to lifestyle. But scholars are no longer being listened to by public powers as in the time of Pasteur…

What do you expect from this new symposium ?

Since politicians do not understand, we must pass to ethics and law. My goal is to have the International Criminal Court recognize pollution and the destruction of nature as public health crimes.

You say that three out of four cancers are linked to the environment. You even tie pollution to autism.

Congenital malformations are considerably increasing. One child in ten is born today with a congenital malformation or rare disease. We have gone from a factor of 1 to 1,000 in 20 years. The best example is autism: one child in 80 is born autistic in developed countries; 20 years ago it was one child in 10,000. In the case of autism, we now know that it is tied to chemical pollution (with organo-chlorine pesticides and mercury – mainly in dental amalgams of mothers) and to the pollution from electromagnetic fields.

How are you sure that this increase in disease is linked to pollution?

We have consistent epidemiological studies and especially a toxicological approach which allow us to reproduce a disease in the laboratory (notably in animals) and observe the same lesions. And finally, a biological approach which allows us irrefutably to say that there are cause and effect links between pollutants and current diseases.

What are the new « environmental diseases » ?

Cancer is exponentially increasing, also diabetes type II, allergies (one in three persons in France is allergic)… We have just shown that obesity is also an environmental disease, in particular caused by chemical pollutants. Alzheimer’s which, according to the previsions of WHO, will double every 10 to 12 years.

During the symposium, you, along with other scientists, wish to warn the general public about invisible and omnipresent pollution in cities: electromagnetic fields.

In addition to chemical pollution, we must now include electromagnetic pollution (emitted by relay antennas, cell phones, Wi-Fi…). We can now affirm with near-certainty that electromagnetic fields are harmful to health.

People are saying there are no conclusive studies. The former Digital Secretary of State, Fleur Pellerin, declared that the harmfulness of waves has not been “substantiated”. The Minister of National Education is developing Wi-Fi in schools…

We are entering a discussion based on opinion: there are thousands of studies! The BioInitiative Report (which summarizes 3,000 to 4,000 scientific articles) shows that electromagnetic fields present a carcinogenic risk, whether from low or high frequencies. The risk of leukemia in a child is multiplied by two if this child resides less than 600 meters from a high voltage transmission line (low frequencies). Concerning high frequencies (or radiofrequencies such as cell phones and cordless DECT phones), one observes mainly homo-lateral brain tumors. The Interphone Study shows a risk multiplied by five of brain cancer in subjects under 20 years of age.

In your consultations you receive « electrohypersensitive » patients…

I have seen the largest number of sick persons in the world (1,200). These are people who have abused six out of ten times a cell phone or DECT phone, or who have a real addiction to computers (in Wi-Fi mode), or have had the misfortune to live beside an electric transformer, a high voltage power line or relay antenna. The symptoms are often headaches, tinnitus with loss of balance, malaise, eczema, stiffness in the neck, cognitive disorders, loss of immediate memory, absence… These people arrive after an impressive medical journey, having seen sometimes three neurologists before being told: “It is in your head!” By then, they are in a pre-Alzheimer state! I have seen a young person 15 years old arrive here in the arms of his mother because he was unable to find his way. He had slept four or five years with his cell phone beneath his pillow! Electromagnetic fields play a role in Alzheimer’s but also, according to my work, in multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.

Professor Dominique Belpomme is an oncologist, President of ARTAC (Association for Research on Treatment Against Cancer. He is author of « These Diseases Created by Man » (Albin Michel 2004) and “To be Cured of or Protect Oneself from Cancer” (Fayard, 2005).
