Cell Phone Warnings Exist

Prevention: Warnings exist

Re article: "Police draw on black humor faced with distracted pedestrians" (24 heures, 6 May 2015)

It is estimated that two-thirds of pedestrians talk on a cell phone while walking. Although wireless technology is useful, it risks turning against us in deadly fashion, like the accident which took the life of a teenager in Geneva. Associations working to educate the public on the risks of this technology are quite helpless, faced with the permanent hold of these gadgets on its users and the silence of the authorities regarding harm.

Warnings, however, exist, such as the ordinance adopted by the city of Berkeley, California, advising buyers of cell phones: "If you carry or use a cell phone switched on in your pants pocket or in your bra, you may be exceeding the federal regulations regarding exposure to radiofrequency radiation. This potential risk is greater in children..."
Another warning: The Appeal to the United Nations of 11 May 2015, signed by 200 scientists from 40 countries, requesting more protective measures in order to limit exposure to wireless technologies, and educating the public about health risks, especially for children and pregnant women.

The impact of the accident in Geneva was immediate and shocking. Are we blind to the long-term impact on the health of millions of users of wireless technology? The initiative of the Lausanne police to launch a campaign warning pedestrians of the danger of inatttention is laudable. The launching of other education campaigns is essential because the health risks of cell phones, such as brain tumors, can also be as deadly.
