Update on Initial Release of the International EMF Scientist Appeal

Update on initial release of the International EMF Scientist Appeal and comment from Prof. Olle Johansson:

Text of letter from EMFScientist.org:
June 4, 2015

Dear EMF Scientists,

We want to update you on what has been happening since the initial release of the International EMF Scientist Appeal on May 11, 2015, almost one month ago.

Overall, we think we are off to a strong start in raising public awareness of the Appeal!

The Appeal was delivered to the offices of His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the Honorable Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the U.N. World Health Organization.

On May 12, Joel Moskowitz presented the Appeal while testifying in support of a cell phone “right to know” ordinance unanimously approved by the City Council in Berkeley, California. The ordinance was passed and is now featured on the “Science and Policy” page at EMFscientist.org.

On May 18, Magda Havas presented the Appeal at the 5th Paris Appeal Congress at the Royal Academy of Medicine in Brussels, entitled “Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance: What Role for Electromagnetic Fields and Chemicals?”

As of today, we have not received any formal replies from the UN or the WHO.

Through our dedicated website, EMFscientist.org, we are receiving inquiries from people worldwide who are interested in signing the appeal, who have specific questions, who express their appreciation and/or who offer assistance. We are also receiving inquiries from major media outlets and many news stories have been published. We have either granted interviews or referred these inquiries to some of you.

To see a selection of some of the major media reports we have posted, we invite you to visit www.emfscientist.org/index.php/emf-media. If you know of other important media reports or interviews that are not listed, please send them to us.

In addition, the International Electromagnetic Field Alliance (www.iemfa.org/appeal) has posted a letter of support for the Appeal, now signed by over 65 non-governmental advocacy organizations (NGOs) in 14 nations. EMFscientist.org is not directly involved with this advocacy activity but wanted to inform you about it. If you know of an NGO, particularly those whose mission includes health, environmental or public policy advocacy, and it is not already listed as Appeal supporters on the IEMFA website, you might advise them to consider contacting Janet Newton, President of the EMR Policy Institute, Inc. in the US. Ms. Newton serves as IEMFA’s coordinator for this NGO list and her email address is JNewton@EMRPolicy.org.

We would like to hear from you!

What can you tell us about the media reaction to the Appeal in your nation? Have you been contacted by the media? Have you noticed any significant outcomes? Are you interested in collaborating with us to help spread the news of this appeal in your nation? Do you have suggestions regarding media outreach, the website, or want to tell us about a qualified EMF scientist whom we should invite to sign the Appeal, etc?

We will be communicating with you periodically and would like to hear from you, too, from time to time. We will let you know right away when we get a response from the United Nations.

We acknowledge that this is just the beginning. It will take a concerted effort, over a prolonged period of time, with all of us working together to achieve more protective international EMF exposure guidelines. Thank you for taking a stand on this important global issue. Best regards,

Elizabeth Kelley, MA

International EMF Scientist Appeal - update from Professor Olle Johansson, 4th June 2015

Professor Johansson says:

EMFscientist.org report to EMF scientists

Please find the initial report sent to me, one of approx. 200 scientists who have signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal so far, attached.

Personally, I have sent the appeal around to all Scandinavian media contacts I have, and to all other news desks, etc., but so far - to the best of my knowledge - not a single tabloid, newspaper, radio or TV coverage... :-(( [As a matter of fact, this is turning out - in general terms - an ever increasing problem. Media of today are occupied with other issues, but very, very rarely with the EMF/health/EHS one. I do not know how to break down that wall...]

I am very disappointed that we have not received any formal replies from the UN or the WHO... :-(((( Are they not obliged to answer?

  1. As far as we know, no Swiss media has reported on this Appeal. My "readers' comment" on warnings about risks of cell phones, including mention of the Appeal, were published in both the Tribune de Genève and 24 heures (Lausanne newspaper). Time and again, we have had to publish EMF news in this way, news not reported in the mainstream Swiss media.
