The New Nanny: Over a Third of Babies Now Use Smartphones - Before They Walk and Talk

The new nanny: Over a third of babies now use smartphones — before they walk and talk
by Jennifer Harper, The Washington Times,
25 April 2015

The news is startling pediatricians. A new medical study reveals that the tiniest Americans are tapping on smartphones and tablets even before they learn to walk or talk, and by 1 year of age, one in seven toddlers is using devices for at least an hour a day.

The research found that even a third of the babies under a year could scroll down the screen, while a fourth managed to actually call someone.

“We didn’t expect children were using the devices from the age of 6 months. Some children were on the screen for as long as 30 minutes,” says Dr. Hilda Kabali, lead author of the study, which was conducted among 370 parents and their babies at a pediatrics clinic in the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Teenager Suffers Heart Attack At School

Note:  This is not the image accompanying the original
article.  We place this as a warning to parents and
educators that health risks from Wi-Fi
radiation in schools could include cardiac arrest.
"The family do not know what caused Wyatt’s heart to stop.  [The boy's father] said doctors had told him Wyatt’s heart could have been weakened by a viral infection or his heart rhythm could have been interrupted by something electrical."

School nurse saves student from heart attack
by Bethany Hiatt, au.news.yahoo.com,
23 April 2015

A Bunbury teenager who collapsed at school after his heart stopped could owe his life to the quick reactions of a maths teacher and the skills of a school nurse.

Wyatt Hancock, 17, was in a stable condition in an induced coma at Fiona Stanley Hospital yesterday after he was flown by helicopter from Bunbury on Tuesday.

His father Bruce and mother Tania said they were “so grateful” to Bunbury Catholic College staff, especially school nurse Miranda McKee who performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.

Mr Hancock said Wyatt had gone to school as usual on Tuesday but collapsed without warning during a midmorning maths class.
“He suffered a severe heart attack and basically just dropped straight to the floor,” he said.

New Statin Study Confirms Scary Link to Diabetes

MDs promote statins for everyone with diabetes.  A new study from Finland concludes that statin treatment increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 46%, attributable to decreases in insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion.  Following this article is the abstract of the study.

New Statin Study Confirms Scary Link to Diabetes
by Joe Graedon, People's Pharmacy, 20 April 2015

Do statins raise blood sugar and increase the risk of diabetes? A new study says the risk of diabetes is substantially greater than previously reported.

In 2003 People’s Pharmacy Readers Were Alerted

We received a signal from readers more than a decade ago that statins could trigger diabetes in people with normal blood sugar and make control of diabetes more challenging in people who already had the disease.

As long ago as 2003 we began getting messages like this one:

“Since we started on Lipitor, our blood sugar has been rising rapidly. My husband asked the doctor about changing to Tricor, but he was told it would not help him much and he should stay with Lipitor. It seems that Lipitor is affecting our blood sugar. Is this possible?”

At that time most physicians did not believe statins could affect blood sugar. We scoured the official prescribing information for atorvastatin (Lipitor) and found hidden away in a long list of other possible adverse reactions the word “hyperglycemia.” In other words, elevated blood sugar. But this side effect was buried along with lots of other seemingly rare complications. Most patients were never warned that there was a connection between Lipitor and blood sugar elevations.

Cell Phones & Breast Cancer - Bras: The No Phone Zone

In a recent ehealth radio network interview, "The growing concern of cellphone and Wi-Fi radiation", Dr. Devra Davis mentioned that Dr. John West, breast surgeon, shared with her that "there are more than 38 cases of young women with unusually located tumors where they've kept cell phones in their bras."  Dr. West is seeing more breast cancer in young women than he’s ever seen in his 40 years of practice. Although the average age at diagnosis of breast cancer is over 60 years, about 13,000 women younger than 40 years are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the U.S.

Cell Phones & Breast Cancer - Bras:  The No Phone Zone
by Stephanie, thescienceofeating.com, 15 February 2015

The talk about cell phones and cancer connection has been discussed for years now, but most still wonder if there’s a real association and concern. One possibility does appear to exist, at least among certain women, and it all depends on where they carry their cell phone.

Thousands, of not millions of women – especially young ones, choose to keep their cell phones in their bra. This seems like the most convenient solution, because it allows women to ditch their purse and become hands-free.

Causing more need for storage is the fact that many womens’ clothes come without pockets, so if you don’t have a purse, the bra is an obvious choice. Also in noisy environments, it’s harder to hear cell phone ring tones, so women like placing their cell phones on vibrate mode and placing it in their bras to continue receiving calls.

A recent survey reveals 40% of college females put their cell phone in their bra at least some time during the day, and 3% report doing it for more than 10 hours a day. However, Dr. John West, a Los Angeles breast surgeon, said women need to stop this practice stating, “We must make the bra a no phone zone,” he said.

Maine's "Cellular Telephone Labeling Act"

Maine's "Cellular Telephone Labeling Act"
saferemr.com, 1st April 2015

The Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology of the 127th Maine State Legislature held a public hearing on the "Cellular Telephone Labeling Act" (LD 883) on Tuesday, March 31.

The bill requires cell phone manufacturers that include safety notifications in their owner's manuals to ensure that the phone's packaging includes these safety notifications or a label indicating where the safety notifications may be found in the owner's manual.

The bill prohibits retailers from selling phones without the appropriate labels. It requires manufacturers to provide the safety notifications to retailers at no cost to the retailers. It prohibits retailers from selling phones that do not bear the following label warning that the device emits radiofrequency electromagnetic fields:

"This device emits radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. Avoid direct contact."

Radiation Concerns: Letter to the Editor of the New York Times

Letter to the Editor of the New York Times from Arthur Firstenberg in response to its article on his recent court case.  "The human aspect of the story was omitted. Ninety-four organizations from six continents, representing several hundred thousand individuals, filed a friends-of-the-court brief supporting my cause in the New Mexico Court of Appeals.  They are people from Namibia, Colombia, India, Faroe Islands, Japan and elsewhere who, like me, are fighting for a right everyone else takes for granted: the right to live in one’s own home."

Radiation Concerns
by Arthur Firstenberg, The New York Times, 7 April 2015

TO THE EDITOR:

Re “Science, Lost in a Legal Maze” (Raw Data, March 24): I entered medical school in 1978. Paul Brodeur had just published “The Zapping of America,” a book exposing the dangers of radio frequency radiation. Dr. Zorach R. Glaser, working for the Navy, had already cataloged 4,623 scientific studies, books and reports showing its health effects. Yet when I was injured and almost killed by this type of radiation, I was unprepared and uneducated. What amazed me most was that so vast a body of knowledge had not been taught to us in medical school.

The Effects of Low-Level Microwave Radiation on the Heart

Re-posted article from 2012:  "In Simcoe County, Ontario, two students suffered full cardiac arrest in the past school year. This incidence of adolescent cardiac arrest is 40 times higher than the expected national average and has struck children as young as 13 years old."  [Could one reason be microwave radiofrequency radiation emitted by wireless technology such as Wi-Fi?]

On 3 April 2015, Sky News published an article entitled
"Cardiac Arrest: Hidden Killer Of The Young":

"The number of young people who die as a result of sudden cardiac arrest is higher than official figures suggest, experts have told Sky News. Latest figures estimate 12 people under the age of 35 die every week in the UK from an undiagnosed heart condition. However, leading cardiologist Professor Sanjay Sharma thinks the real figures are around 25% higher.  He adds: 'I reckon there are probably about 16 deaths per week in the UK from this so-called sudden arrhythmic death syndrome.  These deaths are underestimated because many such catastrophes can present in different ways, for example unexplained road traffic accidents, unexplained drownings and even epileptic seizures'."

The Cholesterol Drug War: ABC Australia Bans Documentary Exposing Statin Drug Scandal

Dr. MaryAnne Demasi from the Catalyst.  Her investigative
reporting on the dangers of statin drugs has now been
banned.
"ABC News in Australia has done an incredible investigative report on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, daring to expose organized crime in the pharmaceutical industry in the U.S. This is an area where no mainstream media outlet in the USA dares to go, due to the influence of the pharmaceutical industry."

The Cholesterol Drug War: ABC Australia Bans Documentary Exposing Statin Drug Scandal
Health Impact News Editor Comments,
8 April 2015

Dr. MaryAnne Demasi’s documentary on the criminal activity of the pharmaceutical industry regarding cholesterol-lowering statin drugs sent shock waves through the mainstream media in Australia last year. Published in two parts on the popular news show The Catalyst, the pharmaceutical industry complained loudly after the first show, and requested the network not air the second episode, “Heart of the Matter Part 2 – Cholesterol Drug War.”

ABC Australia aired it anyway, but the pharmaceutical influence is apparently too strong, as it was announced that the network would remove the videos from their website because “they breached its impartiality standards.” They also removed them from YouTube.

These two episodes were among the most watched videos on Health Impact News in 2013, with tens of thousands of “likes” on Facebook alone, helping the videos go viral outside of Australia.

Comment by Mona Nilsson on Recent SCENIHR Report on Health Risks from Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields

"The report forms the basis for the European Commission’s decision if there are reasons to regulate the wireless products and technology or not. It is a clear success for the industry as it gives the green light for further and continued expansion without any restrictions, regulations or necessary information about health risks to the public.  The loser is public health, in other words virtually the entire EU population of 700 million individuals."

Guest blog from Mona Nilsson on recent SCENIHR report
posted in Between a Rock and a Hard Place, April 1, 2015

This is the next in a series of guest blogs on BRHP. The opinions expressed in it are of Mona Nilsson herself. Publication of these opinions in BRHP does not imply that BRHP automatically agrees with or endorses these opinions. Publication of this, and other guest blogs, is an attempt to support an open debate and free exchange of opinions on RF-EMF and health.

Text below is by Mona Nilsson:

The European Commission recently published a new expert report on the health risks from exposure to electromagnetic fields (SCENIHR). The brain tumour risks from mobile phone use are dismissed on the basis of a cohort study that is so biased that other scientists are surprised that it even got published in a scientific journal.

The EU-report SCENIHR a scientific fraud paving the way for business as usual.

Los Angeles officials halt public-safety LTE network, clouding FirstNet's progress
by Mike Dano, fiercewireless.com,
2 April 2015

The Los Angeles City Council voted to halt the construction of a massive 700 MHz LTE network that was intended to cover 4,000 square miles and 34,000 law enforcement, fire service and health service workers. The action casts a cloud over FirstNet, which is charged with building a nationwide LTE network for police, firefighters and other emergency responders.

According to Urgent Communications, the LA City Council voted 12-0 that "construction of the LTE system at city of Los Angeles fire stations and police stations not commence, or immediately cease, if started." The vote came just days after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors also voted to halt the construction of the network.

According to various media reports, opponents of the network raised a range of concerns about the project. Some were worried that the construction of massive cell towers would reduce residents' property values. Others were concerned of the possible health effects from the operation of cell towers. Others said that the network was being built without input from the community with outdated specifications, was too expensive, and was largely unnecessary.

Wireless and Other EMF Exposures Are a Violation of Human Rights

EMF exposures are constant and can have cumulative effects. Current laws and safety limits do little to protect us. The time has arrived for us to deal with this issue as a matter of urgency, to protect our own health and the health of our family.

Wireless and other EMF exposures are a violation of human right claims Radiation Research Trust

(NaturalHealth365) The European Union (EU) recently drafted a groundbreaking document which would have represented a giant leap forward in protecting citizens from electromagnetic field exposures (EMFs) – especially the growing threat of wireless technology.

At the eleventh hour modifications, proposed by Richard Adams OBE, caused the UK Radiation Research Trust (RRT) to demand that Mr. Adams be made personally accountable for betraying the publics trust by ignoring evidence on the hazards of EMFs from such devices as mobile phones, DECT cordless phones, cordless baby monitors, phone masts, WiFi and smart meters. Save the Girls. Make the Bra a No-Phone Zone

Save the Girls.  Make the Bra a No-Phone Zone
by Dr. Devra Lee Davis, The Green Gazette, April/May 2015

A large number of young women carry their cellphones in the bra unaware that they are exposing themselves directly to microwave radiation. That is not a good idea. In fact, the phones come with specific warnings from manufacturers not to do so.

Dr. John West and his colleagues at Breast Care in Southern California have been working with Dr. Lisa Bailey, former president of the American Cancer Society California and one of the nation’s top breast surgeons. Together with Dr. Bailey and Dr. West’s team, we have accumulated seven cases of young women with very unusual breast cancers, all of whom have no family history and no genetic risk factors for the disease.

Normally, breast cancer occurs in the upper outer quadrant of the breast, towards the armpit. These unusual cases have breast tumours that are barely under the skin and have multiple tumors at the centre of the chest right under the outline of where these women kept their cellphones. Two of these cases are only 21 years old. Breast cancer rarely occurs in 21 year olds. Me These women carried their cellphones in their bras from the time they were 13 years old for hours per day. Multiple primary breast cancer is not common, either. No more than 10 percent of all breast cancers present as multiple primary.

Switzerland: Federal Office of Public Health: Health Effects of Mobile Phones and WLAN

UPDATE : This information was updated on 11 October 2016 but a text in English is not available.

The Editor of this blog has placed in italics the most interesting information.  The  Federal Office of Public Health seems to ignore most of the many hundreds of studies undertaken outside Switzerland on the health effects of electromagnetic fields.

Mobile Phones
Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, latest update 24 February 2015

3. Health effects
Verified effects

Low-frequency magnetic fields
Low-frequency magnetic fields penetrate into the human body, where they induce electrical fields and currents. In the presence of very strong magnetic fields, these currents can give rise to acute nerve stimulation [1]. In order to rule out such effects, the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has set its recommended exposure limits for magnetic fields at a level that is lower by a factor of 50 than the threshold value for the stimulation of the central nervous system by induced currents. Under certain circumstances, the low-frequency magnetic fields generated by the electronics and the battery currents of mobile phones can exceed these recommended exposure limits [6].

High-frequency electromagnetic fields
High-frequency fields can cause the body to absorb radiant energy and thus lead to an increase in body temperature [1]. Based on current exposure limits, however, the radiation from mobile phones is too weak to cause harmful levels of tissue heating.

Other effects investigated
Several expert groups have evaluated the possible health effects of longer-term or less high-frequency radiation [15, 16]. In May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless phone use in epidemiological studies. This classification means that there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals.

2013 Letter to Danish Parliament on the Increasing Aggravation of the Health Status of the Population as a Result of Electromagnetic Radiation

Following is a letter dated 3 March 2013 from Eva Theilgaard Jacobsen, M.A.Psychology, Specialist in psychotherapy, and Susanne Bølling, M.A.Psychology, addressed to the Danish Parliament’s Health and Prevention Committee in Copenhagen on "the increasing aggravation of the health status of the population with particular  focus on neurological/neuropsychological injuries as a result of  electromagnetic  radiation".  It discusses the sharp increase in brain cancers, multiple somatic symptoms, stress, depression, ADHD, Alzheimer's... in the Danish population, concluding that one and a quarter million Danes are suffering from neurological diseases.  The bibliography at the end of the letter cites 53 useful references to studies, appeals, and other documents on this issue.

Audience, 19 mars 2013:
The increasing aggravation of the health status of the population with particular  focus on neurological/neuropsychological injuries as a result of electromagnetic  radiation.

Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), especially from radio frequency (microwave
frequency) radiation (RFR/MWR) from mobile phones and mast transmitters (GSM, 3G, 4G) wireless (DECT) phones, wireless laptops, tablets, e-readers, wireless networks (Wi-Fi, WLAN, Wi-Max, TETRA, etc.) wireless meters ("smart meters") for measuring electricity, water and heating consumption as well as a wide range of other wireless technology, is threatening public health.

In 2011, The World Health Organisation (IARC) updated its warning about the risks to the individual, the environment and professional life, of cancer as a result of radiation from this technology. The radiation represents not only a risk fordeveloping cancer, but also other diseases. The health and functional capacity of current and future generations is in jeopardy.

In addition to individual suffering, it will entail enormous economic costs to society.  As responsible psychologists with insight into the problem, we are very concerned and anticipate that the damage inflicted on health by the radiation will have an explosive effect on the welfare state. The fact that the National Board of Health denies the potential public health disaster which we are facing and overrides the precautionary ALARA principle means that, in the words of the EEA's director Jacqueline McGlade, it is "failing in its duty to protect the Danish people” (1).
