Montgomery County Schools Equip Buses With Wi-Fi

MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- At the beginning of the school year, most students in Montgomery County didn't have access to a computer outside of school, much less an internet connection. But that's all changed.

The school district now has Wi-Fi enabled school buses and sends students home with personal laptops.

"Sometimes I don't even know they're on the bus, they're so quiet!" Bus driver Carolyn Moore exclaimed.

She has been driving buses for nearly 20 years, but no longer sees the mischief she once did.

"Now that the students have computers and Wi-Fi for the long rides home, behavior problems have pretty much stopped," Moore said. "It's a great distraction."

The district received a $3.5 million grant from the Department of Education to pay for technology improvements.

Superintendent, Dale Ellis, said he decided to focus on making bus rides more productive for students because the district is in a rural area which can lead to long bus rides.

"Some of our students are on buses 3 or 4 hours every day," Ellis said. "Being able to do homework on that ride is a game changer."

Students in 3rd through 12th grade now have laptops to take home and the district is getting tablets for younger students.

"Usually poor districts are the last to get the latest technology," Ellis said. "So we're very excited because we think this puts our kids on an even playing field."

Griselda Alvarez-Cruz, an 8th grader in the district, says this is the first time she has had access to a computer at home. Being able to work on her long commutes, she says, is also a major plus.

"The Internet helps a lot. It has a lot of benefits for everyone including me," Alvarez said.
