Opinion/Letter: Cell tower poses a risk for students
by Robert Humphris Jr., dailyprogress.com (Charlottesville, VA), 7 April 2016
I recently received a letter about a balloon test for a personal wireless service facility on Albemarle County school system property on Hydraulic Road.
Really? In the middle of four schools where a child can spend 13 years attending schools in higher than normal radiation? Have members of the Albemarle County School Board and Board of Supervisors actually read any of the many studies on this topic?
Here are a few titles of radiation-effects studies:
I am sure the board members can find a study to refute every one of these, but the fact is that some studies do indeed strongly suggest that something is there.
The letter also claims this will "serve County schools, fire, police, and rescue, as well as private wireless communication carriers."
There already is an extensive county-wide radio. The real users of this tower will be the private communications carriers, which is at the end of the sentence, not the beginning.
I realize that the School Board is trying to make up budget shortfalls with income from this tower, but I feel it is wrong to possibly jeopardize the health of our children.
