Massachusetts: Letter: Health Effects Must Be Acknowledged

LETTER: Health effects must be acknowledged

I was saddened by the story of the boy, “G,” whose Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome is jeopardizing his ability to attend Fay School in Southboro. As a person who has EHS, I empathize with him. People with EHS have the right to expect a safe environment in which to live, work and study.

Electromagnetic frequencies (EMF) from WiFi and devices like smart meters have not been proven safe. Evidence is mounting that they are not. Industry insiders already know what we are now learning as more people experience health effects from wireless emissions: EMF’s are making us sick. In a memo dated September 3, 2010, Chairman Michael Peevey of the California Public Utilities Commission wrote these chilling words to PG&E’s decision-makers, “... let anyone who wants to keep their old meter keep it, if they claim they suffer from EMF ... There really are people who feel pain, etc., related to EMF, etc., and rather than having them become hysterical, etc., I would quietly leave them alone.”

In the case of “G” the remedy is easy, and would also protect the health of other students and staff at Fay school: eliminate the WiFi, and hardwire the computers. In Worcester we should be sure to opt-out of EMF-emitting smart meter programs like National Grid’s. Why take a chance on more kids becoming sick? Countries like Switzerland and Israel have already protected their children by banning WiFi in schools. We should, too.
