Basis Peak Smartwatch Owners Burned as Intel Issues Full Recall for 'Overheating' Wearable

Basis will also shut down its online services later this year
CHIPMAKER INTEL has issued a full recall of the Basis Peak smartwatch following reports of an overheating problem.
Intel-owned Basis halted sales of the Peak a few weeks ago following reports of the overheating. The company claimed that the fault, which has caused some users to suffer burns and blistering, has affected just 0.2 per cent of Basis Peak wearers but has now issued a total recall of the product.
The problem is attributed to an active LED on the rear of the Basis Peak smartwatch that continuously monitors the wearer's heart rate.
The recall affects Basis Peak watches manufactured from August 2014 to July 2015, which were sold from November 2014 until June 2016. So, er, all of them apart from the discontinued Basis B1.
"We are aware that a small number of customers have reported discomfort, blistering or burns on their wrist under the watch body. We are recalling these watches for a safety reason. It is important that you stop using your watch and return it," said the Basis Peak recall notice.
Basis has also announced plans to close an online service that lets users sync their fitness data in order to ensure that people stop wearing the potentially dangerous wearable. Users will have access to the service until the end of this year.
Intel New Technology Group senior vice president Josh Walden explained that the firm tried to fix the fault via a software update but was unable to do so.
"We had hoped to update the software on your watch to address the problem. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we aren't able to develop such a solution without completely compromising the user experience," he said.
"As a result, we are asking that you return your Basis Peak watch and authorised accessories for a full refund at your earliest convenience. This was a tough decision, but your safety is our top priority."
Basis Peak owners can arrange to receive a full refund here. µ
