Electromagnetic Radiation Safety: 2017 Year in Review
saferemr.com, 27 December 2017

EMR Safety addresses scientific and policy developments concerning the health risks from exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Since 2013, it has had over 1.3 million page views by visitors from more than 200 countries which attests to the worldwide concern about the impact of wireless radiation on our health.

During the past year, over half of visitors were from outside the United States with Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Australia, Israel, Germany, Greece, Italy and Sweden represented the most. About two-thirds of visitors were 25-54 years of age and 60% were male.

This site provides a curated collection of links to articles on cell phones and cordless phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi, Smart Meters and other wireless devices. I summarize the peer-reviewed research on health risks associated with wireless radiation including cancer risk, reproductive harm and neurological disorders; and I expose the manufacturing of doubt about these risks by industry-linked scientists.

The following links were the most popular wireless radiation stories in 2017 including related posts and wireless product stories.

Safety Warnings for Cellphones? It's Now Mandatory in California

Safety Warnings for Cellphones?  It's Now Mandatory in California
by Sabine El Gemayel, alternet.org, 24 December 2017

A filmmaker and mother of three worries about the health consequences of wireless technology.

After moving to Los Angeles in the mid-'90s from the Middle East and Canada, I immediately began to see a startling trend. The number of cellphones I saw people using began to grow at breakneck speed especially in a booming city like Los Angeles, with Hollywood, real estate, sports marketing, shopping and high-end businesses everywhere.

In less than a generation, cellphones and the internet have revolutionized virtually every aspect of our lives, transforming how we work, socialize and communicate.  But what are the health consequences of this invisible convenience?

As a mother of teenagers, I am concerned with the shadowy side of wireless technology, and its impact on our children.  I am troubled by the increased health risks and how it is sociologically impacting children's development and behavior.  As a citizen and consumer, I am disturbed by the business effects behind the wireless revolution and its ubiquitous use in schools, at work and at home.

France: A Doctor from EDF (Electricité de France) Accuses Professor Belpomme before the Order of Physicians

(Our comment):  Professor Olle Johansson, who was also undertaking invaluable research on electrohypersentivity, was recently forced to "retire" from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.  Now, the French Order of Physicians is pursuing Professor Dominique Belpomme, president of the Association for Research on Treatment against Cancer (ARTAC) and of the European Cancer Environment Research Institute (ECERI) in Brussels for his diagnostic methods regarding electrohypersensitivity.

A physician pursued by the Order for his diagnostic methods for electrohypersensitivity. Professor Dominique Belpomme, Parisian cancer specialist, who is fighting for the recognition of electrohypersensitivy (EHS) as a pathology, is being targeted by a disciplinary procedure of the [French] Order of Physicians (CNOM).  Enedis [French electricity network] is talking to us about "green beans, pickled vegetables" and psychology.  That says a lot about their standards.

The National Council of the Order of Physicians has lodged an accusation against the doctor before the disciplinary chamber of first instance of Ile-de-France for two reasons related to his activities regarding diagnosis of electrohypersensitivity.  This information revealed by the Medical Press Agency (APM) has been confirmed by the Generalist Order.

Avoiding EMF Radiation Not As Easy As Quitting Smoking

A new study says radiation from cell phones, wireless networks and power lines increases the risk of miscarriage.

How much more proof do we need that being online isn’t healthy for us?

The latest terrible tech research is from Kaiser Permanente, published last week in the journal Scientific Reports. In a study of hundreds of pregnant women in the Bay Area, the authors found that those who were more exposed to the kind of radiation produced by cell phones, wireless networks and power lines were nearly three times as likely to suffer miscarriages.

It goes without saying that these electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are around every single one of us. Thanks to our insatiable demand for social media, GPS and “smart” physical devices, there will be more and more of them every year.

your head.  (AP Photo/Richard Drew)
Earlier this month, the California department of health released guidelines warning residents to avoid putting mobile phones up to their heads.

“Keep your phone away from your body,” the state health department writes. “Although the science is still evolving, some laboratory experiments and human health studies have suggested the possibility” that typical long-term cell phone use could be linked to “brain cancer and tumors of the acoustic nerve,” “lower sperm counts,” and “effects on learning and memory.”

Mobile phones emit radiation, which is measured in radio-frequency (RF) energy. In the manual that comes pre-installed on your iPhone, Apple explicitly tells you to use a hands-free option like speakerphone or headphones while talking in order to “reduce exposure to RF energy.” The manual also notes that cell phones are currently tested for radiation assuming the devices would be kept at least 5 mm (0.2 in) away from the body while being carried. That’s a lot more than the thickness of pocket fabric. (On an iPhone 6 and above, you can find this information by going to Settings > General > About > Legal > RF Exposure.)

Health Hazards from Cell Phones -- California Department of Public Health Announces New Guidelines to Reduce Cell Phone Health Risk

Health Hazards from Cell Phones -- California Department of Public Health Announces New Guidelines to Reduce Cell Phone Health Risk
Environmental Health Trust, 20 December 2017

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/20/2017 -- The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) just issuedlong-awaited recommendations to reduce microwave radiation exposures from cell phones, especially for children due to research showing that "long-term, high use may impact human health." The CDPH guidance was spurred by a lawsuit from Berkeley Professor Joel Moskowitz which revealed that CDPH scientists had drafted more than 27 versions of advice since 2008.

"Cell phones came on the market decades ago without safety testing because it was assumed that non-ionizing radiation could not cause cancer. However the scientific evidence is now clear and compelling, this type of radiation is harmful to our health, " stated Dr. Devra Davis, founder and President of Environmental Health Trust, a research nonprofit.

"Cancer is only one of the serious health issues posed by non-ionizing radiation." Davis pointed to a new study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences just published by Kaiser Permanente scientists in the journal Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) that found women with the highest magnetic field exposures during pregnancy had nearly three times more miscarriages confirming a 2012 study with similar findings. Davis notes that Kaiser principal investigator De-Kun Li, MD, PhD has previously published findings linking higher prenatal nonionizing radiation exposures to a higher risk of obesity, and a higher risk of asthma.

The study did not definitively show what was causing pregnancy loss.

A study of hundreds of pregnant women in the Bay Area found that those who were more exposed to the type of radiation produced by cell phones, wireless networks and power lines — radiation that grows more and more common — were nearly three times as likely to miscarry.

The Kaiser Permanente study, published last week in the journal Scientific Reports, did not show definitively what was causing the higher rate of pregnancy loss, nor did it isolate the potential impact of cell phones or other producers of electromagnetic fields, or EMFs.

Tonight CBS Evening News will run a story on California's new cell phone warnings.

Although California's new cell phone warnings underplay the state of the science, many people consider this action by the largest state public health department to be a significant development in response to the efforts of wireless safety advocates to pressure our government to notify the public about the health risks from exposure to cell phone radiation.

The Division of Environmental and Occupational Disease Control in CDPH originally drafted these warnings in 2009, but despite the consensus of the Division to publish the warnings that year, CDPH refused to release them. The Division updated the warnings several times over the next eight years, but CDPH continued to suppress them until now.

"The members of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection emphasize ultimate urgency to defend children’s health from the influence of the EMF of the mobile communication systems. We appeal to the government authorities, to the entire society to pay closest attention to this coming threat and to take adequate measures in order to prevent negative consequences to the future generation’s health."

Russian National Committee of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection - 2008 report

Russian National Committee of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (RNCNIRP) have accepted an important decision on the theme “mobile communication and children`s health” (the text of the decision is enclosed).  The members of the committee give a prediction of possible illnesses, the possibility of which can be high for children, using modern mobile phones.  This decision is based on the results of fundamental researches of biological influence of electromagnetic field, which has been held in Russia during the 40 years and considers the modern data. RNCNIRP considers that the manufacturers should inform the customers about the possible risk for children`s health from using the mobile phone. The point of view of the RNCNIRP is supported by the members of the members of Committees of health protection of both chambers of Russian Parliament.

The members  of RCNIRP  conduct  continuous  activity in  the  area  of mobile  telecommunication  EMF safety.

New Science Reveals Young Brains Deranged by Cellphone Radiation Exposure

Cellphones driving modern humans to the brink of insanity? New science reveals young brains DERANGED by cellphone radiation exposure
by Mike Adamsnaturalnews.com, 15 December 2017

(Natural News) It’s fairly obvious to most intelligent people that modern society is going insane. It’s especially true among today’s hyper-connected youth who seem to be truly deranged and mentally ill, hyperventilating over every issue imaginable such as “net neutrality” or the election of Donald Trump. The lunacy of modern society has never been more extreme, and many of us who observe all this are wondering is there a common cause behind the insanity?

As it turns out, the mass poisoning of human brains with cellphone radiation has only been going on for a generation or so. It may be the common cause behind the insanity, and California health authorities have just confirmed this possibility by issuing new warnings about the adverse brain effects of cellphone radiation exposure.

On Sunday, France’s education minister announced that mobile phones will be banned from primary, junior, and middle schools, calling it a matter of “public health.” While phones are already prohibited in classrooms in France, starting in September 2018 students won’t be allowed to use them on breaks, at lunch, or between lessons either.
“These days, the children don’t play at break time anymore,” Jean-Michel Blanquer said, according to the Local, an English-language publication. “They are just all in front of their smartphones and from an educational point of view, that’s a problem.”

SACRAMENTO – As smartphone use continues to increase in the U.S., especially among children, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) today issued guidance for individuals and families who want to decrease their exposure to the radio frequency energy emitted from cell phones. Although the scientific community has not reached a consensus on the risks of cell phone use, research suggests long-term, high use may impact human health.

"Although the science is still evolving, there are concerns among some public health professionals and members of the public regarding long-term, high use exposure to the energy emitted by cell phones," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "We know that simple steps, such as not keeping your phone in your pocket and moving it away from your bed at night, can help reduce exposure for both children and adults."

Cell phones emit radio frequency energy when they send and receive signals to and from cell towers, and some scientists and public health officials believe this energy may impact human health.

Meanwhile, cell phone use in the U.S. has increased dramatically in recent years. About 95 percent of Americans own a cell phone, and 12 percent rely on their smartphones for everyday Internet access. In addition, the average age when children get their first phone is now just 10 years old, and a majority of young people keep their phones on or near them most of the day and while they sleep.

IT Experts Reveal That Infant And Toddler Brains Absorb More Microwave Radiation From Wireless Phones

First Study To Evaluate Cell Phone Radiation Exposures With Realistic Head Models

In a newly published paper in IEEE Access, cell phone modeling experts reveal that toddlers receive far greater microwave radiation from cell phones than previous research models assumed. The maximum SAR values, a measure of cellphone radiation, in young children’s head tissues were up to 78% higher than SAR values measured in the adult model. The IT researchers call for lower cell phone radiation regulatory limits to account for young children’s exposures, echoing recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics to the US government to update cell phone regulations to protect children.

Researchers from the University of Queensland Australia School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering compared cell phone microwave radiation exposures of adults to infants and toddlers who are three months to three years old. The experts evaluated various scenarios where parents might hold a phone up to a child’s head and computed the cell phone radiation exposures into the child’s skin and brain tissues. Confirming earlier studies by experts at the University of Porto Alegre and Environmental Health Trust (EHT), they found that cell phone radiation reaches further into younger children’s brains than previously estimated.

France is to impose a total ban on pupils using mobile phones in primary and secondary schools starting in September 2018, its education minister has confirmed.

Phones are already forbidden in French classrooms but starting next school year, pupils will be barred from taking them out at breaks, lunch times and between lessons.

Teachers and parents are divided over a total ban, however, with some saying children must be able to "live in their time". In France, some 93 per cent of 12 to 17-year-olds own mobile phones.

"These days the children don't play at break time anymore, they are just all in front of their smartphones and from an educational point of view that's a problem," said Jean-Michel Blanquer, the French education minister.

The measure, confirmed Sunday by the Minister for National Education, was a campaign promise of Emmanuel Macron.

Philippe Huguen / AFP
Mobile phones will be banned in schools and “collèges” [children up to age 15] as of the 2018 return, announced the Minister for National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, Sunday 10 December, during a broadcast of “Le Grand Jury RTL-LCI-Le Figaro”. “We are working on the issue, this can take different forms,” he said. “You may need it for educational purposes, for emergency situations, so mobile phones must be limited.”

This was a campaign promise of Emmanuel Macron.

Many teachers are alarmed by the “scourge” and the “endless war” posed by mobile phones at school. More than eight out of ten teenagers were equipped with a smartphone, according to a 2015 Credoc study, compared to 20% in 2011. The trend begins towards primary school, when students start to have one sometimes from fourth grade onwards when they go to school alone because it reassures parents to be able to reach them at any time.

How Electromagnetic Radiation Affects Male Fertility

How EMF Radiation Effects Male Fertility
In Knowledge by Christian, 6 December 2017

There can be a stigma out there, or an assumption, that when a couple is having a hard time conceiving, that it is likely the woman’s issue. This really isn’t the case, in fact about 50% of the time, male infertility issues are the reason the couple has failed to conceive.

My wife and I struggled with infertility for almost 2 years before we were finally able to have our baby girl. So this is personal for me. Although ultimately we were able to conceive, and we did find some issues along the way that were unrelated to environmental issues, I needed to understand how EMF radiation effects male fertility.

I found most of this when I was just researching for myself, how EMF radiation effects male fertility. I needed to know so I could do everything possible to make changes in my life. So do me a favor, if you get anything at all out of this article, consider sharing it with friends and family. You never know how information can have a positive effect on those around you. Phonegate: The Health and Industrial Issues of a Global Scandal

We are more than six billion persons in the world using a mobile phone. It has become an indispensable object of our daily life. Who is interested in the health risks from cell phones? Who has thoroughly read the user manual of their cell phone? Who has studied the regulations that control phones being placed on the market?

Not many of us! Most of us are seduced into trusting manufacturers and national and international organizations which ensure that mobile phones respect our health and safety.

The failure of national and international regulatory agencies

Unfortunately, our confidence has been violated. Our international system of control and regulation has completely failed. This new health and industrial scandal has been called “Phonegate”, echoing the similar scandal of “Dieselgate”, affecting the Volkswagen Group and other world auto manufacturers.

Apple Warns Customers to Never Use or Carry an iPhone in Your Pocket (2012 Article)

UPDATE (5 December 2017):  The article below is from 2012 - how many mobile phone users have ignored this warning and continue to use or carry a cell phone against the body?  This warning concerns not just Apple iPhones but nearly ALL cell phones.

How many cell phone users are still ignoring this warning?  The U.S. government is aware of the potential dangers from cell phone radiation! Cell phones are NOT the safe consumer devices the industry wants us to believe.

Apple warns customers to never use or carry an iPhone in your pocket
consumers4safephones.com, 27 May 2012

…..or you may be exposed to radiation that exceeds the federal safety limit

Apple has issued a safety warning in every iPhone user manual – but, they deceptively printed it in tiny print and located it in a section where no one will see it. Yep, it’s in yours! Go take a look in the section on radio frequency compliance – in the section that talks about SAR (what’s SAR?) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) required warning to never use or carry the iPhone on your body. You’ll need a magnifying glass, however as the print is so small, it is barely legible with the naked eye. Here’s a quote of what you’ll find in the user guide that came with your iPhone. France's National Health Agency Calls for Reducing Children's Wireless Exposures - Article on the July 2016 Report of ANSES "Exposure to Radiofrequencies and Child Health"

This is the report from ANSES that presented an analysis of test reports of SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) levels by the French National Frequencies Agency (ANFR).  The 2016 report stated  that in 2015, 89 percent of cell phones  tested in direct body contact  had a SAR higher than the maximum limit value of 2 W/kg and 25 percent had a SAR higher than 4 W/kg.

Dr. Marc Arazi, a French physician, made an inquiry to see the actual data. He was first denied the information by ANFR.  After a court challenge and months of pressure, ANFR posted the information on their website in June 2017. The information, however, is not complete, and Dr. Arazi has been obliged to again take legal action against ANFR in order for them to release all the data on the results of the mobile phone tests, filing an appeal with the Administrative Tribunal of Melun on 1 December 2017.

Dr. Arazi maintains a blog on the issue.

France's National Health Agency Calls for Reducing Children's Wireless Exposures
Environmental Health Trust, sbwire.com, 11 July 2016

"All wireless devices, from tablets, remote controlled toys, wireless toys, baby monitors, and cell phones should be subjected to tighter regulatory limits."

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/11/2016 -- On July 8, the French National Agency of Health Security of Food, Environment and Labour (ANSES) published a new scientific report "Radiofrequency Exposure and the Health of Children". Concluding that children are more vulnerable to radio frequency (RF) wireless exposures, the French report recommends immediately reducing exposures to wireless radiation from all wireless devices for young children. Acknowledging the inadequacies of current outdated RF regulations, ANSES recommends strengthening RF exposure limits with child protective safety margins and developing more sophisticated premarket test methods to fully assess human exposures to RF radiation from wireless devices. The new report has made headlines across the country.

Sperm, Fetuses, Children, Adults... the "Planetary Cataclysm" of Electromagnetic Fields (2016 Article)

Do waves make us sick?
by Adorian de Meeûs, lalibre.be, 16 May 2016
(translated by the Editor of "Towards Better Health")

"Blood cancer, Alzheimer's disease, infertility..."

Why are more and more persons becoming hypersensitive to waves (3 to 4% in Belgium)?  Cell phones, Wi-Fi, high power transmission lines... are they causing risks for cancer, Alzheimer's, autism, low fertility?  Oncologist and internationally recognized specialist in the effects of electromagnetic fields on health, Prof. Dominique Belpomme, is Saturday's guest of LaLibre.be.  He denounces the "seriousness of policy denial" and ideological corruption" regarding health.

Dr. Dominique Belpomme is professor of oncology at Paris-Descartes University (Paris V), author of scientific publications, member of several international learned societies, president of ARTAC (Association for Research on Treatment against Cancer).  He directs the European Cancer and Environment Research Institute in Brussels.  Extracts from the conversation in full in Sélection LaLibre.be:

We thank ARTAC for having sent us the full text of the interview with Prof. Dominique Belpomme by la libre Belgique (text as sent by the journalist).

Let's start with the basics:  what are electromagnetic fields?

[Press release] Phonegate : New legal proceedings against ANFR and initial reaction to the communiqué of Nicolas Hulot

[Press release] Phonegate : New legal proceedings against ANFR and initial reaction to the communiqué of Nicolas Hulot
by Marc Arazi, arazi.fr, 2 December 2017

Initial reaction to the communiqué of Nicolas Hulot

By coincidence, our second legal action comes the same day as the launch of an information campaign by Nicolas Hulot, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, on the six proper uses of mobile phones. Our mobilization to obtain from the public authorities a better awareness of users bears fruit. We regret, however, that this initial position of the Minister is to a large extent part of the denial of the health risks by the industrial sector. Contrary to what has been stated in his communiqué, the measures proposed seem to us to be far removed from the important recommendations of the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) in its July 2016 report, “Exposure to Radiofrequencies and Child Health”.

Microwave radiation from wireless technology causes deleterious health issues.
healthunlocked.com, 3 years ago - Extracts

... When my daughter returned from Italy within 2 weeks she was sick and house bound. She started having severe pressure headaches and she believed her head was going to explode. She had neck pain and face pain. Some days every tooth in her mouth ached and she has lovely teeth, not one cavity. Then her hand started to tremble and she started to have severe dizzy spells and it felt like her heart would stop and jerk her when it started again (arrhythmia). She was afraid to drive the car in case she passed out and killed someone. Then her symptoms started to merge with mine, heart palpitations, muscle and joint pain, severe insomnia, ringing in the ears or sounds of white noise (tinnitus), burning in the back of the head, tingling/itchy/burning skin, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, severe memory loss, and extremely poor concentration. It goes without saying we suffered from terrible anxiety.

Mobile Phones and Brain Cancer. Are You Worried? (2012 Article)

[UPDATE 24 October 2016: A 26-year-old Australian woman, Courtney Keady, who has been diagnosed with an "inoperable" 12 millimetre brain tumour on her pineal gland, has accepted to be operated on by Dr. Charlie Teo. The operation will cost her $110,000. Read: Mail online article, "Woman, 26, who thought agonising pain in her head was due to the stress of studying for her degree discovers she has an 'inoperable' brain tumour".]

Mobile Phones and Brain Cancer.  Are You Worried?
by Rick Morton, mamamia.com, 8 May 2012

Dr Charlie Teo isn’t a kook. He is the best brain surgeon in the country [Australia]. He knows the inside of your head like you know the back of your hand. He’s seen the rise in a certain type of brain cancer.

And he’s worried.

Here’s what some of what he wrote on The Punch yesterday: [We could no longer find this article.]

“There are three undisputed facts about the link between mobile phones and brain tumours. Firstly, the jury is still out. Secondly, the number of mobile phone users is increasing rapidly and currently stands at over five billion worldwide. Thirdly, IF there is a causal link between exposure to non-ionising radiation and brain tumours, then the social and financial consequences would be devastating and on a scale never before witnessed in history.

Risk of Brain Cancer Maximum Among Teenagers Excessively Using Cellphones: Study
india.com, 1st December 2017

New Delhi, Dec 1: A recent study by a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, Girish Kumar showed that teenagers who use mobile phones excessively up the risk of brain cancer by at least 400 per cent. Based on research by World Health Organisation (WHO), the study focuses on the effects of mobile phone usage on the human body. The study also stated that excessive use also leads to several other physical and psychological ailments.

Speaking to Zee, Professor Kumar said WHO has listed cell phones among possible carcinogenic, meaning item which can cause cancer. The study on such lines began in early 2000 and within a decade, the study conducted case studies of 5117 brain tumour cases in 10 countries, reports claimed.

UPDATE: National Toxicology Program Finds Cell Phone Radiation Causes Cancer

UPDATE:  National Toxicology Program Finds Cell Phone Radiation Causes Cancer
saferemr.com, 28 November 2017

One of the graphics included on the updated NTP fact sheet.
This month the National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) updated the cell phone information page on its website and the fact sheet which summarizes the NTP cell phone radiation study. See below for a summary of the study and its findings.

The NTP's website indicates that the NIEHS has warned its "federal regulatory partners" (i.e., the Federal Communications Commission and the Food and Drug Administration) that the NTP's research found that cell phone radiation caused cancer in male rats to enable these agencies to provide the latest guidance to the public about safe ways to use cell phones and other radiofrequency radiation-emitting devices.

Phonegate : Initial Response from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Phonegate : Initial Response from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
by Marc Arazi, arazi.fr, 30 November 2017

As part of its ongoing support for the health and industrial scandal of Phonegate, the American organization, Environmental Health Trust (EHTrust), chaired by Dr. Devra Davis, wished to engage the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the subject of the tests conducted on the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) by the French National Frequencies Agency (ANFR) between 2012 and 2015 on the real use (in contact with the body) of several hundred mobile phones. Full measurements were published for the first time by the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) in a July 8, 2016 report, “Exposure to Radiofrequencies and Child Health”.

The Executive Director of the Environmental Health Trust (EHT), Theodora Scarato, wrote to the FDA in June and September 2017 to inform them of the results of these tests and of my action as whistleblower for a better protection of the health of mobile phone users, thanks to a much stricter regulation that does not allow manufacturers to place on world markets mobile phones potentially at risk.

Controversial Paper Suggests Wi-Fi Exposure More Dangerous To Kids Than Previously Thought (January 2015 Article)

Controversial Paper Suggests Wi-Fi Exposure More Dangerous To Kids Than Previously Thought
by Robert J. Szczerba , CONTRIBUTOR, Forbes, 13 January 2015

Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

(Photo):  Do the benefits of immersive learning applications outweigh the dangers of increased cellular and Wi-Fi exposure for children? (Image credit: Intel Free Press via Wikipedia)

Most parents would be concerned if their children had significant exposure to lead, chloroform, gasoline fumes, or the pesticide DDT. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IRIC), part of the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO), classifies these and more than 250 other agents as Class 2B Carcinogens - possibly carcinogenic to humans. Another entry on that same list is radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF/EMF). The main sources of RF/EMF are radios, televisions, microwave ovens, cell phones, and Wi-Fi devices.

Uh-oh. Not another diatribe about the dangers of our modern communication systems? Obviously, these devices and the resulting fields are extremely (and increasingly) common in modern society. Even if we want to, we can’t eliminate our exposure, or our children’s, to RF/EMF. But, we may need to limit that exposure, when possible.

Digipigi: Credit Suisse's Multi-Million Campaign Flops

Hardly any demand for children's app - Digital piggy bank devours TV million - Private Banking with Pigi instead of Platinum.

Credit Suisse bosses are proud of their youngest baby. It is called Digipigi, consists of a computer app and a digital piggy bank and should bring children to the bank early.

It's great, they say. In fact, hardly anyone wants the app. In Google Play, the US giant's electronic store, the Digipigi app has a non-measurable demand.

Between 50 and 100 people have previously downloaded the Digipigi program on their mobile phone.

Digipigi, a Potential Health Risk to Children: Letter to "Family First Switzerland"

We objected to this photo in the
article because, if connected to Wi-Fi,
the iPad should not be held on a
child's lap.
Today, we mailed this letter to the group, "Family First Switzerland" after we saw their online article promoting the Digipigi:  "That`s why Digipigi can teach kids in Switzerland about money”.  For now, the connected piggy bank is sold only in Switzerland, however, the idea may catch on with banks in other countries.  If this happens  in the United States, we promised to alert the group, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood which has clout regarding forcing manufacturers to pull connected toys from the market.  The group shares our concerns about the impact of a device such as Digipigi on a child's development.

Promotion of Digipigi

Dear Sir/Madam,

We were very concerned to read the article, “That`s why Digipigi can teach kids in Switzerland about money” on your site.

The Digipigi, destined for children from age 3, is a potential health risk to children. It functions with a smartphone and Wi-Fi connection, exposing the child to radiofrequency (RF) radiation each time the child uses the object.

Mobile Phones and Brain Cancer: 'No Evidence of Health Risk' Is Not the Same As 'Safe'

Mobile phones and brain cancer: ‘no evidence of health risk’ is not the same as 'safe'

number of scientists concerned about brain cancer.'

We exist in a sea of radiofrequency radiation never before seen in human history. Are we lab rats in an experiment with no controls?

Do mobile phones cause brain cancer?

This has been an ongoing debate for decades, but whenever someone asks this question, it’s usually met with scepticism and the debate is shunned. I used to react the same way. But once I started digging into the evidence, it became clear to me that the answer was much more complex than I had imagined.

There are over 6 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, many of them smart phones, with Wi-Fi functionality. Since the widespread use of mobile phones, overall brain cancer rates have not increased and this is often used as proof that mobile phones are safe. But this is short sighted, mainly because brain cancer can take decades to develop and being also rare, it’s unlikely to show up easily in data from the general population. In fact, US statistics do show an increase in brain tumours in younger people.

Switzerland: Is 5G Mobile Wireless a Health Risk?

"Peter Kälin, president of the Basel-based Doctors for Environmental Protection group, is warning that 5G uses very short waves, which will be absorbed by the skin. He adds, “The skin is already exposed to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. 5G could present an extra cancer risk”.

Is 5G mobile wireless a health risk?

swissinfo.ch, 14 November 2017

(with video - to watch in English, click on circle at bottom of video, "captions", "English")

The Swiss government has revised the allocation of frequencies, clearing the way for 5G, or fifth generation mobile wireless, but critics are warning it could be bad for our health. (SRF/swissinfo.chexternal link)

5G is 100 times faster than 4G. It’s a wireless connection built specifically to keep up with the proliferation of devices that need a mobile internet connection. The first 5G applications will be available in 2020 or 2021, allowing higher data transfers with shorter response times. That means content will download quicker, or websites will load faster. Multiple input and output antennas (MIMOs) will probably be used to boost signal anywhere 5G is offered.

Typically when a new mobile wireless technology arrives, it’s assigned a higher radio frequency. 4G occupied the frequency bands up to 20 MHz. Soon the 694-790 MHz frequency range, originally reserved for broadcasting, will be made available for broadband mobile communications applications in Switzerland. The government has also freed up frequencies in the range of 1,400 - 3,500 MHz for mobile communications.

But Peter Kälin, president of the Basel-based Doctors for Environmental Protection group, is warning that 5G uses very short waves, which will be absorbed by the skin. He adds, “The skin is already exposed to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. 5G could present an extra cancer risk”.

Switzerland: Open Letter to the Health Care Team at the Lancy Medical Center, Geneva, on Wireless Technology

Open Letter to the Health Care Team at the Lancy Medical Center, Geneva, on Wireless Technology
by Meris Michaels, 24 November 2017 (translation)

The Lancy Medical Center includes seven physicians specializing in internal medicine, 21 psychiatrists/psychologists, one specialist in obstetrics/gynecology, and a number of therapists (https://cmlancy.ch/).

Recently opened, the Center did not have Wi-Fi in the second-floor waiting room (internal medicine) up until now. The personnel at the reception, including a number of young women, are being saturated with electrosmog (cordless phones, Wi-Fi, smartphones…). On several occasions, I talked to my doctor who is director of internal medicine at the Center, and to the personnel about this.

Imagine my disappointment recently to find Wi-Fi in the waiting room ! Being sensitive to Wi-Fi, I experience pressure in my head. My doctor is skeptical that the radiofrequency (RF) radiation emitted by wireless technologies can produce health risks. He said to me that the Centre would lose “customers” if there was no Wi-Fi in the waiting room.

Denial of the risks of radiation for health is a sign of unhealthy collusion among the medical personnel. Almost no physician in Geneva has the courage to admit there is a risk. Do they know better than the 246 scientists from 41 countries who signed the International Appeal requesting effective protection against exposure to electromagnetic waves?

The Monsanto Papers, Part 1 — Operation: Intoxication

The Monsanto Papers, Part 1 — Operation: Intoxication
Stéphane Horel, Stéphane Foucart, Le Monde, 20 November 2017 translation

In order to save glyphosate, the Monsanto corporation has undertaken an effort to destroy the United Nations' cancer agency by any means possible. Here is the part one of an investigation from Le Monde.

Editors Note: This month Le Monde won the Prix Varenne Presse quotidienne nationale (Varenne Award for the national daily press) for their Monsanto Papers series, an investigation on the worldwide war the Monsanto corporation has started in order to save glyphosate, originally published in June.

Below is part one, originally published June 1, 2017, translated by GM Watch and the Health and Environment Alliance.

"We have been attacked in the past, we have faced smear campaigns, but this time we are the target of an orchestrated campaign of an unseen scale and duration." Christopher Wild's smile quickly faded. Through the window of the high rise where the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is headquartered, the rooftops of Lyon, France, spread out behind his tall figure.

Christopher Wild is the director of the agency so he weighed every word—speaking with a seriousness appropriate for the situation. For the past two years, a blazing onslaught has targeted the institution he is running: the credibility and integrity of IARC's work are being challenged, its experts are being denigrated and harassed by lawyers, and its finances weakened.

BioInitiative Report: Medical Concerns Intensify Over Deadly Brain Tumors from Cell Phone Use

BioInitiative Report: Medical concerns intensify over deadly brain tumors from cell phone use / Orebro University Hospital, Orebro, Sweden/November 17, 2017

A new update from the the BioInitiative Working Group 2017 shows the evidence has strengthened for brain cancers related to wireless phone use. The Group has released an update analyzing scientific results of case-control studies published between 2010 and 2017 on cancers of the brain.

For glioma, a malignant brain cancer with a very poor survival rate especially for high-grade glioma, there is nearly a doubling of the risk overall if the cell phone is used for 1,640 hours or more. If the cell phone is used primarily on the same side of the head however, the odds of getting a tumor on that side of the head increase to more than two and a half times compared to those with no wireless phone exposure.

Survival time after brain tumor diagnosis is also shorter with wireless phone use in patients with glioblastoma multiforme, compared to patients with no use.

Smartphones Are Damaging This Generation's Mental Health

Smartphones are damaging this generation's mental healthby
Jean Twenge, Professor of Psychology, San Diego State University, weforum.org, 17 November 2017

Around 2012, something started going wrong in the lives of teens.

Even if online time doesn't directly harm mental health, it could still
adversely affect it in indirect ways.
Image:  Reuters/Edgar Su
In just the five years between 2010 and 2015, the number of U.S. teens who felt useless and joyless – classic symptoms of depression – surged 33 percent in large national surveys. Teen suicide attempts increased 23 percent. Even more troubling, the number of 13- to 18-year-olds who committed suicide jumped 31 percent.

In a new paper published in Clinical Psychological Science, my colleagues and I found that the increases in depression, suicide attempts and suicide appeared among teens from every background – more privileged and less privileged, across all races and ethnicities and in every region of the country. All told, our analysis found that the generation of teens I call “iGen” – those born after 1995 – is much more likely to experience mental health issues than their millennial predecessors.
