Smart Meters in the News

Going against the flow:  Campaigners make a stand.
Five recent articles on smart meter harm.

haringey-today.co.uk, 8 March 2017

A CAMPAIGN of resistance is being waged by residents of three Tottenham streets against Thames Water’s installation of controversial smart water meters.

Defiant householders in Argyle Road, Vicarage Road and Sutherland Road complain the meters, which wirelessly record and transmit how much water a home uses, are effectively surveillance devices – a claim the utility company strongly refutes.

Greenock woman's £14 MILLION gas bill
greenocktelegraph.co.uk, 12 March 2017

A STUNNED Gourock woman has been told she used £14 MILLION worth of gas in ONE day – when her supply wasn’t even turned on.

Mary Davidson, right, has been caught up in the problems caused by faulty ‘smart meters’ operated by energy supplier SSE, who have blamed the errors on a ‘software upgrade’.
The meters are placed inside people’s homes and provide a continually updated display of the cost of energy being used each day.

The information is sent back automatically to the supplier but Mary is one of the customers around the country whose meters have shown amounts much higher than normal.

Mary and her husband Jim first noticed the problem last month.

Mary, who retired a few years ago as personal assistant to Morton chairman Douglas Rae, said: “We usually glance at the meter from time to time to see how much energy we’re using.

“Our combined gas and electricity costs are normally about £5 a day in winter, so we couldn’t believe it one day when we saw it was showing £485 for only one hour!

Kentucky Senate bill could let you opt out of smart meter
wpsdlocal6.com, 10 March 2017

FREDONIA, KY - Kentucky Senate Bill 121 would "require utilities seeking to install smart meters to give notice to affected customers and the right to opt out of having a smart meter installed."

Roy Rogers is a Kenergy customer. He was shocked when he saw his bill. He usually pays around $240 a month and now it's $440.

"We did not see the increase in kilowatts per hour until the smart meters," said Rogers. He spoke to a group of Kenergy customers this week who are feeling the same way.

Issue of smart meters draws crowd to Lansing
freep.com, 8 March 2017

LANSING — Is your smart meter making you sick? Invading your privacy?

An overflow crowd of more than 150 people jammed into a committee hearing today to voice their support for a bill that would make it easier for utility customers to have smart meters removed from their homes or refuse to have them installed at all.

The meters allow utilities to track electric and gas usage, as well as outages, remotely, instead of having someone come read the meter.

Those opposed to the meters say they are a source of health problems, an invasion of privacy and put customers and the electric grid at risk for hacking.

Smart Meters causing tidal wave of mysterious illnesses that strike people in their own homes
prepareforchange.net, 7 March 2017

In recent years there have been increasing reports that “smart meters” – the digitized electric meters that are designed to send usage figures to power companies wirelessly – are causing a range of health issues among a growing portion of the population where such devices are in use.

In fact, notes the EMF Safety Network, a growing number of people from around the world are beginning to report health problems they believe are related to an increased amount of wireless radiation from various devices, including smart meters.

“Utilities claim smart meters are safe, and compare them to cell phones. However, cell phones, cell towers, wi-fi and other wireless devices can also affect your health,” the organization states on its website. “Reducing your EMF exposure can benefit your overall health and wellness.”

The group also notes that the World Health Organization has classified radiation as a 2B carcinogen, and based that declaration on studies that have linked cell phone radiation to brain tumors.
