GREENBELT, Md. -- Parents and homeowners in Greenbelt are frustrated about the latest plans to put a cell phone tower on the grounds of Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
Parents said they feel like cell phone reception is taking precedence over the health of their families. Homeowners, said they too are worried about the radiation, but also, about their property value going down
Community members packed into an informational meeting Tuesday night to voice their concerns and show their opposition.
The future cell phone tower at Eleanor Roosevelt High School is the latest step in a long term plan to add more than 70 cell phone towers to schools in Prince Georges County. An agreement the school board made with a company called Milestone Communications years ago. The arrangement gives $25,000 dollars to the school district for each tower allowed on school grounds.
Milestone has a website with details about plans for this tower. The site says radiation from the tower will be within federal guidelines and cites the American Cancer Society saying there are no known cancer risks.
However, more than a 1,200 parents and community members are not convinced, and have formed a Maryland Coalition To Stop Cell Towers on Maryland School Grounds.
