A leading girls’ independent school has asked its pupils and their parents to sign a contract promising to reduce smartphone use at home.

The school said that it wanted to help families to reset digital habits by requesting them to ban phones during mealtimes and to use commuting time to “read, listen to a book or talk”. The terms of the voluntary contract include a promise to implement a phone-free weekend or a digital holiday.

The two-page “Family Phone Pledge” was sent to parents of pupils at South Hampstead High School, whose alumnae include Helena Bonham Carter and Rabbi Julia Neuberger. It was endorsed by Victoria Bingham, the head teacher, but drawn up by sixth-form pupils studying psychology who said that they were alarmed by their dependence on smartphones.

One hundred seventy scientists from 37 countries, including two Swiss, a physician from Zurich and Doctor of Biology, Daniel Favre, from canton Vaud, signed an appeal asking the United Nations to act to stop the deployment of 5G (1) for health reasons. Dr. Favre explains:

Dr. Favre, why did you sign this appeal for a moratorium against 5G in May 2015 (2)?

You will understand from the summary:
"We the undersigned scientists, doctors, environmental organizations and citizens from many countries, urgently call for a halt to the deployment of the 5G (fifth generation) wireless network, including 5G from space satellites. 5G will massively increase exposure to radio frequency (RF) radiation on top of the 2G, 3G and 4G networks for telecommunications already in place. RF radiation has been proven harmful for humans and the environment. The deployment of 5G constitutes an experiment on humanity and the environment that is defined as a crime under international law."

The Federation of Swiss Doctors (FMH) also opposes the operators' request to increase the power of base stations in our country. Can we say that there is a real outcry from the health sector against this new technology?

A Helsinki University researcher says Finland's current digital and 'phenomenon-based' learning methods used in schools may not be suitable for all students.

Finland's new digital and phenomenon-based curriculum programmes hinders student learning, according to a new study from Helsinki University.

The psychology researcher behind the study, Aino Saarinen, told Yle's Swedish news service that one of the reasons behind the recent decline in Finland's ranking on Pisa education lists is an increase in the use of digital learning materials. The researcher's findings were first reported by Helsingin Sanomat (in Finnish).

For some time now - thanks to regular top placement in the international Pisa education rankings - Finland has been touted as having the best education system in the world. And to improve on this, policymakers made the decision to bring digital tools to the forefront of classrooms.

Dr. Marc Arazi is a medical doctor and radiation health activist. His 2016 enquiries and subsequent legal action led to the release of French government documents in 2017 which list cell phones that generate radiation levels in excess of legal thresholds. The radiation levels noted by the government in 2015 revealed that radiation levels from nine out of 10 cell phone manufacturers were as much as three times statutory guidelines.

Canadian researchers blame telecoms and phone makers for creating an unsustainable business model.

The common practice of buying a new smartphone every two years is taking a toll on the planet and threatens to undermine efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Canadian researchers have found.

In a research paper published earlier this year, McMaster University associate professor Lotfi Belkhir, along with recent graduate Ahmed Elmeligi of the faculty of engineering concluded that the global information and communications tech sector — including consumer devices — is in the midst of a rapid explosion in its carbon footprint.

While the entire sector accounted for just 1 to 1.6 per cent of global carbon emissions in 2007, by 2040, it will account for 14 per cent of emissions, the researchers projected. That's the equivalent of half the transportation sector's emissions.

The Phonegate Scandal

We note that people are amending the French Wikipedia entry on "Phonegate".  We question the current title suggested for the entry:  "Marketing of non-compliant mobile phones" ("Commercialisation de téléphones portables non conformes").  To us, it says little about this serious public health and industrial scandal.  If the reason for eliminating "Phonegate" is that it has never been "read" or "heard" by people then that is false. The term was coined by the journalist Pierre le Hir in his article published in one of the most important and widely respected newspapers in the world, Le Monde, on 23 December 2016, « Soupçons sur les ondes des téléphones portables » (English translation: "Suspicions about Mobile Phones").  We would wish  the term, "Phonegate" to become commonly known.

We remind people that this is a very serious public health issue, affecting hundreds of millions of mobile phone users worldwide, who have been overexposed for more than 20 years to the radiation from their mobile phones.  This especially concerns children, pregnant women, an estimated 300 million persons suffering from microwave sickness and others who are more vulnerable to this type of radiation.
