Phonegate Alert reveals a new exceedance detected by ANFR of the limit of the specific absorption rate (SAR) (4.33 W/kg instead of 4 W/kg) on the CrossCall Core S5, a smartphone mainly intended for professionals (police officers, firefighters). Despite a requirement to release a corrective software update, the Agency has still not published the non-compliance report in its DATA database, despite our repeated requests.

The Core S5 is already the 59th dangerous mobile phone to be flagged for non-compliance since we began reporting in 2018.

CrossCall targets professionals

French manufacturer CrossCall, which specializes in rugged smartphones for security, defense, healthcare, and construction, launched this new model, the Core S5, at the end of 2024. However, at the time of publication, there is no information on its website regarding SAR exceedances or updates.

Exposure to electromagnetic waves: a widely underestimated public health issue

The SAR measures the energy absorbed by the body when using a device. This latest incident highlights the urgent need to reduce user exposure, especially for professionals who are required to use such equipment on a daily basis for several hours at a time (security forces, healthcare workers, etc.). The health risks associated with electromagnetic waves, which are increasingly well documented, require strict compliance with standards by manufacturers and authorities.

CrossCall: A misleading response from the manufacturer

In response to this finding, CrossCall, at the request of ANFR, carried out a software update aimed at reducing the transmission power of its terminals, bringing the “limb” SAR down to 1.45 W/kg. However, this correction does not erase the seriousness of the initial exceedance, nor the issue of protecting users who have not performed the update. And as our real SAR calculator shows, the Core S5 has head and trunk SARs that exceed 7W/kg. Once again, we are faced with a clear regulatory failure!

Exposure to anthropogenic electromagnetic fields (EMFs), especially those of wireless communications (WC) has increased tremendously. This is an unprecedented phenomenon throughout biological evolution because, all anthropogenic EMFs, being fully polarized, coherent, and, especially WC EMFs, highly variable, differ substantially from the natural EMFs. WC EMFs consist of Microwave (MW) carrier waves, modulated, by Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) signals, and included in on/off pulses repeated at various ELF rates. Moreover, they exhibit intense random variability, mainly in the Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) band. Thus, WC EMFs are a combination of MW and ELF/ULF EMFs. The combination of polarization/coherence and intense low-frequency (ELF/ULF) variability seems to be the key to EMF-bioactivity. Epidemiological and laboratory studies highlight a connection between ELF or WC EMF exposure and cancer, infertility, electro-hypersensitivity, and various other pathologies. Studies also find DNA damage and Oxidative Stress (OS) which explain these pathologies. While man-made EMFs cannot directly ionize molecules, they are capable of doing this indirectly in biological tissue, by triggering the biosynthesis of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which can damage biomolecules, including DNA. The (over)production of ROS and the consequent OS are triggered by irregular gating of Voltage-Gated Ion Channels (VGICs) in the cell membranes as described by the Ion Forced Oscillation (IFO)-VGIC mechanism: Mobile ions within VGICs forced to oscillate by the applied ELF/ULF EMFs exert forces on the voltage sensors of the VGICs, similar to or greater than the forces that physiologically gate those channels, resulting in their irregular gating (dysfunction). Dysfunction of ion channels disrupts intracellular ionic concentrations. This triggers ROS overproduction and OS by the ROS-generating systems/enzymes in the cells, such as the electron transport chain (ETC) in the mitochondria, or the NADPH/NADH oxidases (NOXs), the Nitric Oxide synthases (NOS), etc. The IFO-VGIC mechanism and the consequent OS constitute a comprehensive mechanism that explains all known adverse biological and health effects reported to be induced by anthropogenic EMFs.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was created by an act of Congress in 1934 in order to manage and allocate nonfederal use of wireless spectrum; which includes radio broadcasting, mobile communications and satellite services. It is a small portion (band), of the full electromagnetic spectrum; that identifies and allocates a select range of frequencies in allocated spaces. These bands carry information in the form of vibrations (frequencies) within defined channels. They include phone calls, music, news, TV, emergency communication etc. It was in 1993 that Congress authorized the FCC to use competitive bidding (auctions) to grant long term licenses for rights to use specific frequencies for commercial wireless communication. This coincided with the advent of and subsequent rapid growth of wireless telecom, cell phones, the internet, and telemarketing. Banks of antennas were installed on towers, building rooftops, water towers, steeples, and satellite dishes appeared like mushrooms. Towers hosting multiple telecom providers dotted the landscape and the exploding world-wide addiction to wireless connection made owning bands of spectrum worth billions at auction.

The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) report briefly mentioned electromagnetic radiation (EMR), but failed to accurately convey the scientific literature revealing how it harms human health, according to EMR experts and safe technology advocates who spoke with The Defender.

“The MAHA Report,” released May 22, identified four “key drivers” behind the childhood chronic disease epidemic. EMR, which wasn’t included as a main driver, was mentioned only briefly in the report’s section on environmental chemicals.

Miriam Eckenfels, director of Children’s Health Defense’s (CHD) Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) & Wireless Program, said EMR should have been listed as a fifth main driver.

“The report’s discussion of EMR serves as a conversation-starter,” Eckenfels said. “But it misses the mark in terms of acknowledging the impact of wireless radiation on the childhood chronic disease epidemic.”
