1. The findings of our new study published in "Anatomy and Cell Biology" journal shows that exposure to GSM 900 MHz mobile phone radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) decreases the proliferation of neural stem cells (NSCs).

2. Decreased neuronal differentiation in NSCs was also observed in cells exposed to RF-EMF.

3. Exposure to GSM 900 MHz RF-EMF does not influence NSCs viability and apoptosis.

4. Active neurogenesis from the stem cells occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy, which could possibly get affected by accumulating dose of exposure to mobile phone RF-EMF.

5. Further research is needed to verify if exposure to mobile phone RF-EMF during the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with increased susceptibility to disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism in the offspring .

In an extract from his new book, Brian Merchant reveals how he gained access to Longhua, the vast complex where iPhones are made and where, in 2010, unhappy workers started killing themselves

The sprawling factory compound, all grey dormitories and weather-beaten warehouses, blends seamlessly into the outskirts of the Shenzhen megalopolis. Foxconn’s enormous Longhua plant is a major manufacturer of Apple products. It might be the best-known factory in the world; it might also might be among the most secretive and sealed-off. Security guards man each of the entry points. Employees can’t get in without swiping an ID card; drivers entering with delivery trucks are subject to fingerprint scans. A Reuters journalist was once dragged out of a car and beaten for taking photos from outside the factory walls. The warning signs outside – “This factory area is legally established with state approval. Unauthorised trespassing is prohibited. Offenders will be sent to police for prosecution!” – are more aggressive than those outside many Chinese military compounds.

While the Swiss are very disappointed in the new European directive on roaming, there has been no attention accorded to the evolution of the "Phonegate" scandal, revealing that nine mobile phones out of ten exceed the legal standards of radiation set by the European Union when used in contact with the body.  These same norms govern Switzerland.

This scandal, which echoes "Dieselgate" in terms of the failure of international monitoring protocols, risks to be even more serious.  While Switzerland does not want to hear about this, some associations for the protection of public health in the United States have brought it to light.

A French physician, Marc Arazi, the person launching the alert on "Phonegate", has just written to the French Ministers for Health and Ecology to ask them to take urgent measures to inform the population of the risks and preventive measures such as carrying and using the cell phone at a distance from the body, recommended in all the manufacturers' user guides.

As for the Federal Councilors Alain Berset and Doris Leuthard, there is total silence because the Confederation is the major share-holder in Swisscom and promotes digital technology without warning consumers of the risks.  Where then are the authorities who are really concerned about the health of citizens?

France released radiation measurements for hundreds of cell phones tested independently by the government of France. When cell phones were tested in positions mimicking an individual holding the phone directly against the body, the radiation levels were so high that most tested phones exceeded European limits, showing radiation levels up to three times higher than the limits!

Marc Arazi, a medical doctor, is constantly alerting the public authorities to the potential health dangers of the waves of our cell phones. He has just written about this to the new government.

Following your actions, the National Frequencies Agency (ANFR) has finally made public the results of its tests on mobile phone radiation. Are you satisfied?

My satisfaction is like the publication of these data: partial. At the beginning of June, ANFR decided to publish on its site only a part of the SAR* test results that it carried out between 2012 and 2016. These data confirm that more than a hundred cell phone models made by various manufacturers present a real risk to users. Some of them show a SAR value measured in contact with the trunk that is three times the maximum standard value. In my view, the consumer is being “deceived” by the SAR value displayed by the manufacturers and the real SAR value revealed by ANFR. It is imperative that industry explains its practices and takes measures to inform its customers. It is significant that Apple, who has doubtless recognized the commercial risk and possible financial loss, is starting to inform its customers to either use a hands-free headset or place the device more than 5 millimeters away from the body. The measurements provided by ANFR confirm that low-radiation technology exists: it is possible to produce phones with a low SAR value.

Hybrid and electric cars may be cancer-causing as they emit extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic radiation (EMR) or magnetic fields. Recent studies of the levels of EMR emitted by these automobiles have claimed either that they pose a cancer risk for the vehicles' occupants or they are safe.

Unfortunately, the little research conducted on this issue has been industry-funded by companies with vested interests on one side of the issue or the other which makes it difficult to know which studies are trustworthy.

Meanwhile, numerous peer-reviewed laboratory studies conducted over several decades have found biologic effects from very limited exposures to ELF EMR. These studies suggest that the EMR guidelines established by the self-appointed, International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) are inadequate to protect our health. Thus, even if EMR measurements do not exceed the ICNIRP guidelines, occupants of hybrid and electric automobiles may be at increased risk for cancer and other health problems.

Research looking at symptoms from dizziness to breathing and vision problems said to have ‘flight safety consequences’

Flying a plane should come with a hazard warning, according to researchers, after a study found a link between contaminated air and the health of the crew.

A new study led by the University of Stirling is said to be the first of its kind to look in depth at the health of those suspected to have been exposed to contaminated air during their work.

It showed a clear link between being exposed to air supplies contaminated by engine oil and other aircraft fluids, and a variety of health problems, researchers said.
