The film "Electric Malady" will be screening at the 5th Global Science Film Festival in Bern, Switzerland on Saturday 28th October for its Swiss premiere!

In collaboration with the Swiss Science Film Academy, the mLAB presents the 5th Global Science Film Festival. World politics and science meet on the big screen. The festival will show international feature films, documentaries and short films that link social developments with current scientific debates. Following the film screenings, the topics will be explored in depth in moderated discussions between the audience, filmmakers and researchers.

Electric Malady - 28 October at 17h

Under a cloak made of fabric laced with copper wires, William is encountered in a remote cabin in Sweden. For ten years he has been fighting an illness that eludes scientific evidence: hyperelectrosensitivity. People who experience symptoms caused by electronic radiation that make it impossible for them to continue living in digitalized everyday life. The visually stunning film describes the experiences of a young man and his emotional world in dealing with the illness, the support of a worried family, but also the inadequacies of a health system in dealing with an invisible illness, the symptoms of which are nevertheless a stark reality for those affected.

Marie Lidén is a Swedish-born, Glasgow-based artist and filmmaker. She focuses on documentaries, animation and sound design. Her films range from BAFTA-nominated animated films to television documentaries. Electric Malady is her first feature film.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between director Marie Lidén and Tobias Bracht, professor at the University Hospital of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Bern. The discussion will probe the way in which society deals with disturbing diseases and how these can be portrayed in film.

The film portrait tells the remarkable life story of the eco-activist Vandana Shiva.

Vandana Shiva is one of the most important activists of our time. For four decades she has been committed to local and ecological agriculture and the free availability of seeds. She fights against powerful corporations that dominate agriculture through the sale of pesticides and genetically modified seeds, inspiring an entire global movement for greater food justice.

The directing team founded Becket Films to encourage people to advocate for a healthy environment and social justice through film. They have produced more than 15 documentaries, many of which have won awards, including Sons of Africa.
