Americans for Responsible Technology – 19mar2025.
As you may recall, last May, ART filed a Citizen’s Petition with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), requesting that the agency comply with federal law (21 USC 360ii) which requires FDA to protect the public from radiation emitted by electronic devices. We gave many examples of how the FDA was in violation of the law, and suggested ways in which it could comply.
“No, thanks,” said the FDA (we’re paraphrasing). The agency went on to claim it was already complying with the law, and anyway our Petition was not precisely specific about the action we wanted them to take. Besides, they said, the FDA was only responsible for protecting the public from “unnecessary” radiation.
Hmmm, we thought.
What about school classrooms? What about powerful routers and access points that are emitting radiation all day, every day? We know that these things come factory-set for maximum power, and in most cases, that’s much more power than is required to connect everything in the classroom. Isn’t the excess power “unnecessary”?
Of course it is. And our kids are getting all that “unnecessary” radiation.
We were ready to go to court, but we decided to first ask the FDA to issue a Health Advisory to all schools, alerting them about excessive radiation in classrooms and recommending immediate testing and remediation.
So that’s what our new Citizen Petition is all about, and we hope you’ll be part of it!
