A fourth case study that studied the health effects of radiation from new 5G base stations shows that three people in a family have an increased incidence of a range of symptoms linked to exposure to microwave radiation. The study also shows that the radiation in the home was greatly increased due to the proximity of two base stations for 5G whose antennas were aimed at the home.

The new case study, which was published in the Journal of Cancer Science and Clinical Therapeutics, was carried out by Mona Nilsson from the Radiation Protection Foundation and Dr. Lennart Hardell, former professor of oncology at Örebro University Hospital and epidemiologist with 40 years of research experience and now working at the Environment and Cancer Research Foundation . They have also published the previous three case studies done on the health effects of radiation from 5G base stations. These four case studies appear to be the only ones done so far on the health impact of 5G.

Measurements showed elevated radiation

The new study eamines exposure from 5G and self-reported occurrence of symptoms among 3 people within the same family. They live in a home located in the direction of the antenna from two base stations for 5G that are 50 and 70 meters apart. The sketch below shows the location of the home (A) in relation to the two 5G base stations (B, C).

The measured radiation levels in the home were very high in relation to the levels previously shown to cause ill health as a result of radiation from previous generations of mobile phones (2G, 3G).

In the room that was closest to the base stations, the highest levels were measured, up to 1,200,000 μW/m 2 in maximum value.

In measurements in the bedrooms of the persons studied, the levels of radiation were greatly elevated at the headboard of the beds and varied depending on the distance to the base stations from 34,000 μW/m 2 at the farthest bed to 320,000 μW/m 2 at the nearest bed.

Base stations for 3G and 4G existed for at least ten years in the same positions but were replaced by 5G in mid-July 2021 and during May 2022. There are no measurements of the levels in the home at the time before the commissioning of the 5G base stations, but from experience 5G means significantly higher radiation than 3G and 4G. The previous 3 case studies showed that the people studied quickly developed typical symptoms linked to exposure to elevated microwave radiation that they did not have before. That 5G would increase radiation enormously could be understood from a report from Ericsson before the expansion of 5G.

The symptoms in the family

As in previous case studies, the three people who were part of the new study had to fill in a form themselves, where they indicated which symptoms they had at the time of the measurement and estimated the severity themselves.

The most common symptoms were sleep problems, fatigue, concentration problems, impaired short-term memory and visual impairment, but the severity and type of symptoms experienced by different family members varied. For 50 years, research has described that women appear to be more sensitive than men and that a "surprisingly large" range of different  neurological and physical symptoms can be expected as a result of microwave exposure. The youngest woman in the family had the most symptoms and rated her symptoms the highest, even though the values measured in her bedroom were lower than those of other family members. However, the radiation levels were greatly elevated in her bedroom and far above the levels where researchers had previously observed increased incidence of these symptoms in studies. The value at the head pillow was 34,000 μW/m 2which is far above the levels, from and around 100-500 μW/m 2 , which according to previous research can increase the occurrence of these symptoms. It is also far above the levels that researchers and doctors recommend that people should be exposed to, which is 1-10 μW/m 2 in the bedroom (EuropaEM EMF Guidelines). People are generally more sensitive to this impact during sleep.

Measured radiation in the home at the head pillow: 34,000 – 320,000 μW/m 2

Previous research health effects (2G) from: 100-500 μW/m 2

Recommendations for maximum radiation in bedrooms: 1-10 μW/m 2

Applicable reference value Swedish Radiation Safety Authority: 10,000,000 μW/m 2 x 1000

The table above illustrates the absurdly high reference value from the Radiation Safety Authority in relation to observed health effects and to the recommendations of independent researchers. The reference value that the Radiation Safety Authority believes would protect against all "guaranteed health risks" (= proven) is measured as an average value over 6 minutes. In the current study, the maximum value has been measured. The Radiation Safety Authority's reference value, which is based on recommendations from the industry-friendly organization ICNIRP, allows maximum values of up to 1000 times the average value of 10,000,000 μW/m 2 . See this article.

Previous studies

This study is now added to previous studies that have also shown that 5G causes ill health among the people who live near the base stations. In these studies, the people studied have lived or worked either directly under the base stations (2 cases) or at a distance of 60 meters (1 case). As in this case, greatly elevated levels of radiation were measured, above 2,500,000 μW/m 2 (maximum value of the meter used) in two of the studies and similar maximum level, ie about 1,200,000 μW/m 2 in one of the studies.

In the previous studies, the subjects judged themselves to be in good health before exposure to 5G, despite the fact that all had 3G/4G base stations previously in the same position as the new one for 5G. But in all cases, the people studied became so ill in a short time, in one case within a couple of days, that they chose to move. It became impossible to continue staying in the home or in the office.

Scientists and doctors have been warning since 2017

Since 2017, scientists and doctors have warned of serious consequences for human health as a result of the increased microwave radiation that 5G brings. The current 433 signatories of the 5G Appeal state that it is already fully proven that radiation from previous generations causes harmful health effects and that the increase that 5G will bring can therefore be expected to cause serious consequences, not only for human health but also for the environment.

They also stated that it is unacceptable that 5G is rolled out, without research showing that the radiation does not harm human health or the environment, which is why a moratorium has been requested since 2017. This means that the expansion of 5G should not take place before research has been done, which shows that the technology is safe.

Such research has still not been done. The shocking truth is that there is absolutely no research showing that radiation from 5G base stations does not harm human health or the environment. The only studies to date on the health effects of whole-body exposure to real 5G are the now-published case studies by Hardell and Nilsson, all published in 2023, three years after telecom companies began mass exposure of people in their own homes, workplaces, schools and public spaces to 5G radiation that had never been safety tested.

The microwave syndrome described 50 years ago

The symptoms reported by the people in these studies were already described in the 1960s and 1970s as an effect of long-term exposure to microwave radiation at levels below the reference value applied by the responsible Swedish authorities, including the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

According to Karel Marha, the head of Czechoslovakia's work environment institute at the time, it was observed that people exposed in the profession often developed a group of symptoms that in the 1970s was named the microwave syndrome: sleep difficulties, fatigue during the day, memory problems, worry/anxiety, headaches. The effects are mainly due to the influence on the functioning of the central nervous system.

These effects, which were observed over 50 years ago at levels below the Swedish authorities' reference values, were mainly due to the signal's characteristics regarding modulation and pulses, which were considered more harmful than a steady signal.

"It appears that the effects of the HF field upon the organism are reversible to a considerable extent and the effects of repeated irradiation are cumulative. We may say that in the course of time the organism becomes more perceptive of the effects of the field.  The biological activity depends directly upon the field intensity; not only the average power but the peak power as well. A pulsed output generator is therefore biologically more effective than a continuous wave generator of equal average output of the same frequency. Results obtained to date tend to indicate that poly-frequency radiation is biologically more effective and therefore more hazardous." (Marha, 1969, page 188)

These factors are also not taken into account by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority's reference value, which is based solely on the ability of the radiation to heat tissue in a short time (within 60 minutes) and is checked by measuring the average value over a 6-minute period, regardless of whether the signal is modulated, pulsed or whether there are many different frequencies at the same time. The authorities' reference value thus lacks protection against these health effects that have been described for several decades, but also against harmful, more serious long-term effects in the form of cancer and degenerative diseases.

In the past 20 years, the microwave syndrome has also been observed in the vicinity of base stations for 2G or 3G in repeated surveys of health conditions in the vicinity of base stations and mobile masts. According to a compilation carried out by the Radiation Protection Foundation in 2022, more than 30 studies have shown an increased risk of ill health within a distance of 500 meters from mobile masts. Most have studied increased incidence of symptoms of the microwave syndrome, but also increased incidence of cancer and ALS have been reported. A research overview published in 2022 reported that a clear majority of published studies show an increased risk of ill-health for residents in the vicinity of mobile masts and mobile base stations.

Current reference values extremely high

The reference values for authorized radiation applied in Sweden are seriously flawed and lack protection against the many harmful health effects shown in repeated research at levels far below the current reference values. In all four of the currently available studies, the people studied have suffered from symptoms of the microwave syndrome even though the measured elevated levels are far below the current reference values. The reference values only protect against heating effects that occur when the radiation is intense enough to heat tissue (within 60 minutes).

The reference value is therefore criticized for being inaccurate and indirectly dangerous as it gives telecom companies the green light to forcibly expose people in their own homes to levels of microwave radiation that are known to be harmful:

ICNIRP's values do not protect, but "pose a serious risk to human health and the environment since they allow harmful exposure to the world population, including the most vulnerable, under the unscientific pretext that they are 'protective'." THE EMF CALL .

In an article published in 2022 , 16 world-leading researchers in the field point to the many misconceptions built into the reference value. 259 scientists have also signed an appeal, the EMF Scientist Appeal , which states that the reference value lacks protection against a range of harmful effects that have been shown in a growing body of research and that the reference value must therefore be lowered.
