Mobile telephony is an integral part of our daily lives, but its development also raises health and environmental issues. The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) therefore commissioned the University of Fribourg to inaugurate a national medical consultancy network dedicated to the topic of non-ionising radiation (RNI). At the same time, the FOEN published the second report on monitoring exposure to RNI, which shows that health protection is guaranteed.

According to the report, 5-10% of the Swiss population considers itself electrosensitive. To accompany the development of mobile telephony and in particular the introduction of 5G, the Federal Council has approved a series of accompanying measures for health protection. These measures include the creation of a new medical consultancy service dedicated to the topic of RNI.

The aim of the MedNIS medical consultancy service is to offer better medical advice to people suffering from disorders that can be traced back to RNI. On behalf of the FOEN, the Institute of Family Medicine at the University of Fribourg has created a Swiss medical consultancy network dedicated to the topic of RNI. By agreement with their family doctor, electrosensitive people can request consultation from a specialist. The Institute of Family Medicine of the University of Fribourg evaluates the investigations conducted by the specialist from a scientific point of view and draws up regular reports for the attention of the FOEN. At present, seven doctors from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland have been trained. Consultations will begin in the next few days.

The MedNIS consultancy service represents an important step towards improving the health of Swiss citizens. Mobile telephony has become an essential element of modern life, but its spread has also raised concerns for human health. Non-ionizing radiation emitted by mobile devices can cause DNA damage and increase the risk of cancer. Additionally, many people report symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue in the presence of EMFs.

The RNI exposure monitoring report demonstrates that health protection is ensured. Overall, the population is moderately exposed to RNI. In places regularly frequented by people, exposure to RNI is lower than the release limit values. Even in schools, exposure is low. However, the highest values were recorded near train stations and tram stops, where the number of mobile device users is particularly high. These values also remain significantly below the release limit values. The lowest values were recorded in natural areas.

The next report on monitoring exposure to RNI will be published in 2024. In the meantime, the FOEN will continue to finance multi-year research projects on the effects of mobile telephony and radiation on health and the environment. Aspects investigated include the effects of radiation on the brain, sleep, sperm production and insects.
